Phillies, Angels front runners for Halladay

    Here we go again......

The Roy Halladay sweepstakes are back to where they were last July.

The Phillies and Angels again have emerged as the front-runners in trade discussions for the Blue Jays' ace right-hander, according to major-league sources.

The Phillies, one source said, are offering a package of young players, likely including left-hander J.A. Happ and one of two outfielders, Domonic Brown or Michael Taylor.

The Angels, as first reported by the Toronto Sun, are offering left-hander Joe Saunders, shortstop Erick Aybar and minor-league center fielder Peter Bourjos.

The Jays, weighing three- and four-team scenarios in an attempt to maximize their assets, likely would spin Saunders to another club for additional parts.

Trade talks are fluid, and other names likely are in play. Halladay's approval is needed for any deal, and he likely will require a contract extension to waive his no-trade clause.

The Phillies almost certainly would need to clear payroll space simply to acquire Halladay, perhaps by trading right-hander Joe Blanton, who figures to earn approximately $7 million in salary arbitration.

However, purging Blanton would not provide enough of a savings, one source said. The acquisition of Halladay, who will earn $15.75 million next season, would push the Phillies well beyond their budget limit, and other moves would be required.

At the same time, signing Halladay to an extension would give the Phillies protection against the possible loss of left-hander Cliff Lee to free agency after next season.

The Angels, meanwhile, are angling for Halladay while also trying to re-sign the best starting pitcher on the free-agent market, right-hander John Lackey. If they retained Lackey, they could pull out of the Halladay talks without losing any players.

All of the players under discussion from both the Angels and Phillies were part of the Halladay talks involving the respective clubs last July. But Halladay, entering the final year of his contract, does not have the same trade value he did then.

If either the Phillies or Angels lands him, they will give up less than they would have before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

Obviously this isn't the most credible source but, Harry Mayes just said on 97.5 that a source he has within the Blue Jays organization said that Halladay will be in Phillie pinstripes by the end of the weekend. Mayes' sources have more often than not been accurate with this shit, not that that means anything about this guy in particular. Still, I have my fingers crossed. The thing that sort of worries me is that the expected Phils dealt are Happ, Taylor and BASTARDO. That last one just makes me think that there is no way this happens. If the Phils get Halladay for those 3, Amaro needs to be arrested for stealing.

If the phils get him they will have one of the sickest rotations on all of the mlb.

I really hope the yanks either get Lackey or Halladay

Could you imagine a WS rematch between the Phils and the Yanks if the Phils get Halladay and the Yanks get Lackey? That would be insane, those rotations against each other.

Maybe the Phils will figure out how to hit Andy this time around.

This is one of the only times I've heard more about a blue jay moreso then the leafs.

Its going to be sad to see doc go but on the other side I hope he goes to a good team and wins a championship. He's to good to not be given a playoff chance.

            Leafs offseason training!

if he stays in the AL East I'm gonna turn in my jays fan card.

not watching rebuilding with Roy coming to town in those fuckin jerseys, not a fucking chance in hell.

anywhere else and i could probably live with it.

Be honest, if he went to the Phils and they beat the Yanks or the Sox in the WS you'd like it a little. Not as much as Joe Carter....

Fuck I couldn't finish that sentence.

There have been talks of that. That would be too much in my opinion. And a little to "Philly". The guy had a bad season and made some comments that were blown out of proportion because they were taken out of context. He's only 25, let's not go crazy now.

                    Hamels isn't going anywhere.

I heard the players the Phils offered were Happ, Brown, Bastardo and another low level prospect.

Im digging that package the Angels put together.

Im kinda glad we didnt move him before the deadline now as it appears teams are going to be out-bidding each other this off-season and we'll be able to maximize the return on Doc now. It'll be one of the saddest days in Jays history when he leaves, but hes a class act and deserves a legit chance at some real success.

That's a damn good 3 but now the talk is Lee would be moving in a 3-team trade...

Halladay to Phils, Lee to Angels, Jays to get prospects...

it was said that Lee will not give a discount to Lee and many feel Halladay may sign just below what C.C and Santana signed for while Lee may in fact go around CC and Santana...

I'll LOL...phils better get their financials straight...i don't advocated trading Lee while getting back Doc.

Don't trade Lee away if you have the opportunity to have both guys on your roster for a full season.

What this says is despite winnning a WS and getting back to the WS, they don't have the money to pay Halladay and Lee coming up.

They'll also have victorino and Werth along with Hamels they'll have to pay...they don't have the Yankees roladex.
