Rookie Pay Scale close to changing

In December 2008, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the current system for changing rookie pay would not change until 2011.

Apparently, there's been a calendar malfunction at 280 Park Avenue.

Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports that the league has proposed the implementation of a rookie wage scale for the April 2010 draft. She also reports that the NFLPA has responded with a proposal that would change the structure of the rookie deals beginning in 2010, too.

The league's proposal, per Mullen, would pay players a fixed amount based on draft slot, with a "significant" portion of the savings being distributed to retired players. The NFLPA responded Tuesday with a proposed three-year limit on rookie contracts, along with a two-year extension to the current labor deal and a commitment by the owners to match the payment to the retired players arising from the contribution flowing from the savings in rookie pay.

I dont like the 3-year limit on rookie contracts. I wouldnt accept that in exchange for the wage scale.

Looks like these teams with bad front offices will finally get bailed out.

It's not just that though, even good front offices are saddled with rookie contracts.

It looks bad when established NFL players are making far less than 22 year old unproven rookies.

I don't disagree, I don't like the contracts the way they are now.

wonder what the odds of this happening without a full labor agreement are, you would have to think pretty slim. could be either a really boring offseason ( no agreement) to an exciting one with.

i think that article is a litte ignorant on college if anything it will encourage those leaning to go pro to go just so they can start the counter on years in the league just like they do in the NBA. which could hurt the draft liek it has in the NBA. more potential than proven.

This is for this draft? It's a little fucked up to announce this after people have made their decisions on whether or not to declare.

It's good for the league, but really should've been announced sooner.

I really doubt there's gonna be a 3 year limit on rookie contracts. That will likely be tossed out when the new rookie pay scale is finalized IMO

Three years seems like a reasonable number to me if a pay scale is initiated. If a player proves his worth in that time, he won't have to worry about the possibility of his team forcing him to play out his rookie contract an additional season or two. It also gives teams a cheaper option without much obligation if their picks don't pan out.

3+1(team option) I think that would make the best sense..Pay Scale is def. needed though...

Agreed. I dont like the 3 year deal, some players are still trying to find their way. I like the option of a 4th
