A lot of NBA superstars could learn something from Kevin Durant

In the "I am the greatest, I am me" NBA, Kevin Durant is refreshing.
No one-hour ESPN special to announce his contract extension - a simple Twitter line and conventional press conference.
And no "Give me the entire cover" with SI. He insisted teammates be on it with him.
The NBA could use a few more Kevin Durants.

Shame he couldn't save NBA Elite 11 ... but that's asking too much from anyone.

I like Durant and believe that he's authentic; however, I don't like how the media is trying to play him up as this "breath of fresh air" for the NBA. The league is full of stars who are "good guys". At this point in his career Durant hasn't done anything except lead the league in scoring. He's a top 5 player who has yet to go through the ups and downs and pressures of trying to carry his team to a championshp as all superstar players go through.

I don't like the way the media is playing him up, because once he's been in the league a while and the Thunder are continously losing in the playoffs the media is going to turn on him. Right now they say, "Oh he's such a great guy, great teammate, etc" and in a few year's they'll be saying, "He doesn't have that killer instinct, he's too nice, etc" I'm just sick of the media cycle. Ever since Jordan they've been building these guys up, just to tear them down and fans just blindly follow. They did this mess with James and we've seen how that has turned out. In a few years when Durant doesn't live up to the image they'll move on to Harrison Barnes.

Hit right on it ralaw. They build these guys up and when they stumble or fall, they ravage the corpse of the "once humble nice young player."

Durant is human, he'll make mistakes in the future. Now, he'll always be expected to give the polite and humble response. Whenever the day comes and he doesn't, it does not mean he's a prick.

The "win championships or you're a bum" theory only applies to NBA stars and NFL QB's. And its pretty silly.

Yep, that is mostly the reason why James went to Miami. James went the Miami route, because he was tired of the pressures of carrying a mediocre franchise by himself. In James we're talking about a guy who obviously lifted a dead franchise into contention every year who carried a team to the finals when the second best player on the team was Larry Hughes, yet because he hasn't won a championshp he's a loser. Please.

Yeah, I don't really care about James one way or the other, but it makes me shake my head when you hear "what has he ever done?!"

Multiple MVP's, taking that team to a Final, winning almost 70 games with that roster, etc. But nothing matters in the NBA unless you win the ring. It's a horrible mindset, and you're right, it's perpetuated by the media.
