David Stern to NBA PA: "I must break you"

The latest word from Commissioner Stern about the pending Collective Bargaining Agreement: He wants to slash player salaries 30%.

NBA commissioner David Stern says there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league has revealed it is seeking a reduction in player salary costs by about one-third.

NBA commissioner David Stern said Thursday there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league revealed it is seeking a reduction in player salary costs by about one-third.

Stern said the league wants player costs to drop $750 million to $800 million. Deputy commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA spends about $2.1 billion annually in player salaries and benefits.

"We would like to get profitable, have a return on investment," Stern said. "There's a swing of somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 to $800 million that we would like to change. That's our story and we're sticking with it."

My guess? Stern wins. I buy the Bill Simmons theory that NBA players are horrible with money, and it's likely that half of them are living game check to game check. As a rookie, Kevin Garnett showed up to practice with 50 large in his front pocket, bulging like a tumor. There's Antoine Walker, whose money troubles were well documented; Allen Iverson is now playing in Turkey despite being one of the highest paid athletes in America for 10 years of his life ... The list goes on. NBA players are fuck-ups with money, and Stern knows this. He will eventually get his way with the CBA, because the players can't afford to sit through a lockout.

I doubt the players association agrees to let him cut salaries that low, but ultimately, Stern will win out and get a decent reduction on player costs.

I think this was a long time coming. I have no idea how the NBA was still able to afford "Jordan-era" salaries when most of the stadiums are half empty, TV ratings are abysmal, and you still have teams moving from city to city like a fly-by-night operation. If Stern is serious about this, he needs to figure out things on his end, which would include consolidating the league and getting rid of 6-8 teams. As it stands now, you have too many teams taking slices of the NBA pie.

The ratings for The Finals were good, and for some ungodly reason, All Star Saturday Night does well despite being completely unwatchable and resembling a really bad MTV Rock & Jock game meets Jay Z concert. But yeah, ABC, ESPN, and TNT do not do particularly well for rank and file games, and many teams can't give away tickets.

The NBA does a good job marketing stars, but the pile of uncharasmatic bores of this era do them no favors. Plus fans realise before the season starts that only about 3 or 4 teams have any shot at winning.

Also contraction with any team besides the Kings is going to be extremely difficult because of REALLY long leases on publicly funded arenas.

They already broke ground on the Barclay's Center and I think Prokhoroff has stock in the building.

So the Nets aren't going anywhere unless Stern wants to make himself an enemy with the Russian mob.

Kings, Warriors are the most viable options for contraction. Grizzlies are locked in. Charlotte is locked in.

I wonder the PR implications of that... but they are an option as well.

I have nothing but hate for David Stern. I still haven't forgiven him for taking the majority of playoff games off network TV.

It'd be criminal to take the W's out of the Bay Area. That crowd was electric for the playoff run. That's a great basketball city when the team is good. The coach and ownership situation are abysmal right now, but the fans turn out.

I know that wasn't enough to save the Sonics, but I would be shocked if Stern signed off on that type of robbery happening again.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Raptors get axed, honestly. Sorry Kuz.

Expansion has killed the NBA. I'm with Senser, eliminate 6-8 teams.

Well Sacramento, who outside of the last few years, have been one of the other great basketball fanbases may also lose their team to relocation and sadly it's just the nature of big business basketball and a bankrupt state.

In regards to the Warriors, they are under new owenership which thankfully has gotten rid of Don Nelson, but they play in an outdated arena and I'd be interested to see if they are another team losing money. The Bucks are an option as well. Decent fanbase but outdated arena and no real desire from the city to build a publicly funded arena that can generate more revenue.

Contraction is way easier said than done unfortunately. It would probably benefit the NBA to skim off some of the fat (Bobcats, Grizzlies most notably) but it's just not that viable.
