He may have brought Tennessee basketball into the national spotlight, but he was never going to win a championship, even though he cheated immensely and brought thug players who have no intention of actually doing anything academic at the school. He never built a solid team together. Always brought in 4-5 star guys that all play the same.

The best pure shooter on the team this year was the walk on Skylar Mcbee. SKYLAR MCBEE.
Good summation. Pearl gets in athletic players, but that could just be a product of his disregard for recruiting/academic rules. He is a horrible game-day coach. I had picked Michigan over them in the tournament because I knew a Pearl team could not handle a 1-3-1 zone. Its retarded.

Kind of like ND will never win in March because they don't recruit athletes and only white guys who shoot threes?

Notre Dame's graduation rate is 100%. Tennessee's is 40%. At least Brey isn't a poor representative of his institution.

Pretty much sums it up. The players were always so interchangeable. You could never tell who was a guard and who was a forward on that team because it was always full of 6'6 swingmen who all wore head bands. I've thought about this for 10 more seconds and I would be strongly against Pearl coming to LSU.

He's a scumbag (read the Deadspin piece, it's pretty revelatory) and as you have said, a terrible on-court coach.

IMO college basketball championship teams are the ones built like basketball teams.

A solid PG who is the leader of the team. Tons of assists, runs the offense, and can drive and hit a shot in the clutch. Most important part of the team.

2 wing guys who will hit open shots created from screens or any time they are open.

2 big guys to hold down the paint. Eat rebounds, and maybe one guy that has good post moves.

2 or 3 bench guys that bring energy. Guys to change momentum.

Teams like Duke and UNC are great at building teams similar to this idea. Most teams in the Big East and Tennessee, are built with star athletes. Those 6'6 guys that basketball ability is equal to their athletic ability. Maybe ok shooters, but rather drive and dunk/foul. You can win games with that formula because most teams aren't developed enough to keep up. But it is not tourney basketball. It is why Big East doesn't last long in the tourney despite good regular seasons. They aren't consistent enough to beat great teams that play good basketball.

Pearl never built a team at UT with a solid foundation, and IMO never tried to.
