EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been suspended for the first five games of next season for his flagrant foul on Dallas guard J.J. Barea in Los Angeles' final playoff game.
The NBA announced the suspension Tuesday, two days after Bynum was ejected for the foul in the two-time defending champions' 36-point loss to the Mavericks in Game 4.

The NBA also fined Bynum $25,000 for "removing his jersey and the manner in which he left the court."
The infraction will cost him $702,272 overall, including the fine.
Bynum expressed remorse for his actions Tuesday, saying his actions were terrible and unacceptable.
"My actions ... don't represent me, my upbringing, this franchise or any of the Laker fans out there that want to watch us and want us to succeed," Bynum said. "Furthermore, and more importantly, I want to actually apologize to J.J. Barea for doing that. I'm just glad that he wasn't seriously injured in the event and all I can say is, I've looked at [the replay], it's terrible and it definitely won't be happening again."
I would be showing remourse too if I was losing 3/4million dollars
With 8:21 left in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal series, and the Lakers down by 32 points, Barea beat Steve Blake off the dribble, drove the lane and soared to the basket for what looked like an uncontested layup. But the 7-foot, 280-pound Bynum closed in and threw a right elbow into the 6-foot Barea's ribs. Barea flew sideways to the court and remained there writhing in pain.Comment

Seriously though to me, Yes. The game was out of hand the series was over. totally uncalled for, like i said before, if this was game 2 Im fine with it because it would make him think about it for atleast two more games. And dont just swing an elbow, if you want to bury the guy atleast make it look like you want to block the shot or somethingComment

Feel like we are watching a childrens rec league sometimes. that was my entire problem with it, it was a cheap shot and he did nothing to hide it in any way. Some MMA fighters dont throw elbows like that.
Im not just singling him out, I posted in the EC Semis thread, that Boozer is a dirty mother fucker and Im a Bulls fan.Comment

Surprised how nonchalant some of you are towards this.
That was one of the dirtiest cheap shots I've ever seen in sports. Bynum is a loser.Comment

True, but I've seen worse(Kevin McHale clotheslining Rambis in '84 comes to mind). Bynum's shot was a love tap compared to some of the shit Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, M.L. Carr, Dennis Awtrey and others used to do.Comment

My only real issue with the foul and any cheap shot is that Barea was exposed....any basketball player with a bit of sense should understand what its like to drive the lane, elevate and not expect to be knocked over or undercut while in mid-air. For this reason alone it was certainly a punk move. IMO players have an obligation to protect each other even in the heat of battle. Its one thing to give a hard foul and another thing to take out a defenseless player.Comment

J.J. Barea said on Wednesday that he received a voicemail from Andrew Bynum apologizing for his flagrant foul in Game 4.
"I think he means well," Barea said. "He's a great guy and great player. He had a big mistake, and I think he regrets it. And he apologized in public, so I'm good." Bynum has already been fined $25,000 and suspended for the first five games of the 2011-12 seasonComment
