    Yao Ming Retires

Rockets center Yao Ming has decided to retire after nine NBA seasons, Yahoo! Sports has reported, citing league sources.

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has decided to retire after nine NBA seasons, Yahoo! Sports and the Houston Chronicle have reported, citing league sources.

Yao's contract had expired after this past season with the Rockets, who have missed the playoffs the last two seasons.

They played nearly all of that time without Yao as he battled various injuries. He was limited to five games last season after missing all of 2009-10.

"We'd all be really happy if Yao comes back to play, and I hope he can," new Rockets coach Kevin McHale said when he was introduced last month. "I think he'll give it his best shot. His body is going to dictate if he can come back and play. That's all going to be laid out in the future.

"But who wouldn't like Yao Ming, a big guy who can really make shots, just a huge force in the middle? That's out of my control. We'll see where that goes."

It's a shame he was built of glass, he could have been dominant with the league's lack of centers right now.

lol...now the Rockets will be a contender. At least he made the decision for them. Had he stayed, they would have kept him just to make all the money from the Chinese. They now have to look for their next center w/o always believing Yao would come back.

I can't even think of a season where he played a majority of the games.

Maybe back in the Steve Francis days.

This kind of sucks though as an NBA fan. I never really liked him but we needed all the competent big men we could get. He had the tools to be a dominant center.

                Oh well.

He played with a similar group of Centers and just could never figure out how to be a consistent rebounder on the NBA level. If he was his career may have been even shorter tho, who knows? He was built to break down quickly, thats for sure.

What people don't understand is that when healthy, Yao Ming was easily the best offensive center in the league. He was also perfectly fine defensively, and actually dominated Dwight Howard in most of their head-to-head matchups.

Comparing Yao to Shawn Bradley in anything other than height is just insulting to Yao Ming.
