NBA Lockout discussion. *Update 11/14* Union to Decertify

Unfortunately, we'll all be watching lots of hockey highlights. I shudder.

But seriously, what will ESPN do with themselves? They love to pick an NBA theme and pound it home, and show games involving the same half dozen teams against each other. Since they usually ignore the NHL due to bitterness over losing the TV contract, they really have no choice but to ramp up the coverage. Barry Melrose and Matthew Barnaby are going to be busy, considering they don't even employ another NHL analyst.

I suspect they will also ramp up the CBB coverage, which is fine by a CBB junkie like me. But while I don't watch many NBA games these days, I do enjoy following the league. A shortened season doesn't bother me, but a cancelled season would suck.

Although I was looking forward to watching the Sixers this year, I think the NBA needs a season long lockout to clean things up. Too many teams, too many bad contracts. Let them sit for a year and see who's left and actually in business...

I'm surprised no one has said watch hockey. It's becoming one of my favorite sports if not my ultimate favorite. Fun to watch, especially a game like last night in Philadelphia. 17 goals scored!

They are still trying to play a full 82 game season. To which I say, why? 60-66 games should be the norm anyway.

Talks ended today without a deal because they're still haggling over $90 million in revenue.

They've come some way on other issues but the "principle" of the matter is what's standing in the way. Players aren't willing (yet) to give up more money and the owners want more.

Today was on the owners. Players dropped down a ton and owners still balked. Few weeks ago it was the players, today its the owners.

but seriously I'm watching a lot more hockey seriously then I use to. I use to just have it on until NBA Gametime came on but now I watch it all the time.

For the record, the NBA is losing 400M for missing 1 month this year, the players would lose 280M if they would lower the percentage of revenue by 1% over a 6 year period. Dumbasses.

Stern says the owners will now try to recoup all loses from the missed games in the next negotiation.

He concludes that Stern is being used by the group of hardline owners (who have essentially hijacked that side of the table) who want more more more more. Meanwhile, Hunter is taking his orders from agents who feel the players have given up way too much as it is.

Berger estimates that by walking away yesterday, both sides cost their groups a combined $1 billion instead of dealing with the $80 million or so differences they're arguing over.
