Without the NBA around, college basketball needs to put its best foot forward in order to showcase the great game it truly is.
The junior from high-scoring Grinnell College in Iowa set an all-time Division III record for points in a game Saturday when he dropped in 89 for the Pioneers in a 145-97 victory vs. Principia College.
That's decent, right?
Decent enough to rank third all-time in NCAA history. Only the 112 points from Clarence "Bevo" Francis of Rio Grande and the 110 from Frank Selvy of Furman (both happening in 1954, coincidentally) rank higher than Lentsch's effort.
Lentsch shot 27 of 55 from the floor, 15 of 33 from three-point land and 20 of 22 free throws. The 15 three-pointers in the game rank as the ninth-best total in NCAA history.
Grinnell coach David N. Arseneault was just as amazed as anyone.
“We knew Griffin had a chance to put up big numbers," he said. "But something like this is simply amazing.”
You can also chalk Lentsch down as the nation's leading scorer, since Saturday's game was Grinnell's first of the season. We dare anyone else to rival his 89.0 scoring average.
The moment wasn't lost on him, either, as he tried to sum things up afterwards.
"It's still setting in," Lentsch said. "I didn't think I would ever score that many points . . . (My teammates) did such a great job of setting screens and getting me open. I never would have come remotely close to doing this without them."
Lentsch and Grinnell take to the court for their second game Tuesday night at home against Wartburg College.
