David Stern to Jim Rome: "Do You Still Beat Your Wife?"

Stern was on Rome's show the other day, with Jim asking the well-worn question, "Was the NBA Draft fixed?" (referring to the now League-owned New Orleans franchise)

Stern responded with "Do you still beat your wife?"

Rome's never (to my knowledge) been accused of doing so and some believe Stern got itchy when Rome brought up Seattle to begin with.

Both dudes are assholes in their own right but Rome ethering Stern makes me smile.

Stern wasnt really asking him literally if he beats his wife or even insinuating that he does in fact beat his wife. He asked an intentionally preposterous and unfounded question to make his point that asking if the lottery is rigged is also a preposterous, unfounded question.

Stern is a slimy guy. I think a book will be written years from now detailing how he managed to bury the dirty ref scandal under the rug, and other assorted underhanded deeds.

Stern also sounds more jewish than ever with his voice inflections.

I love Jim Rome.

If Jim Rome circa 2004 was involved in this interview it would've ended much worse. Rome has calmed down so so so much since the early 2000's.

Stern was completely in the wrong on this one and looks like a total dousche bag.

I hate David Stern, but I think he is more in the right than Jim Rome. Rome's question was terrible, and he phrased it terribly. I love it when reporters/ESPN guys ask retarded questions then get upset when they get nipped at. Rome asks "Was the fix in?"...does he expect Stern to say "Yes"?

Rome's career was made from asking stupid questions...not that there is anything wrong with that; I like Rome because most reporters treat athletes/coaches like they can do no wrong and shy away from the obvious, but Rome is intentionally over the top. Rome was pouting and taking offense to things that were true. Stern was taking offense to Rome asking stupid questions. The Stephan A. Smith line was classic.

Bottom line is that Stern and Rome are basically the same personality. If Jim Rome were the commissioner of a sport, he'd behave just like Stern. Thats why the sniping between the two sounds so natural...they are both assholes.

All that question is is a very very simple oppurtunity for Stern to just say "No it wasn't in" and try to move on. At that point if Rome kept prodding you could make a point that Rome was in the wrong but the way it was laid out this one is all on Stern.

But he made his name and his career off his edgy questions and getting tossed around by Jim Everett. And he did it intentionally to provoke. His question to Stern was obviously edgy, so I don't think Rome is being misrepresented in this case. The proof is in the pudding.

Rome worded the question poorly, and made it so Stern would have to answer point blank yes/no. Rome could have just as easily asked something like "How would you respond to the rumors that the NBA Draft Lottery isn't legitimate?" to give Stern some room for an explanation, but he didn't. Thats bad reporting in my book, and I don't think Rome is that big of an idiot so I assume it was intentional. And Stern did make his point that no matter what happened in the lottery, there would be someone complaining about a fix.
