Nets, Magic Making Progress On Howard Trade By Involving Cavaliers

It was kind of funny, I was reading on twitter all of these hypothetical deals (that wouldn't happen) where Orlando gets so much better than the shit they're going to get from the Nets. There are so many other teams that could offer so much more appealing pieces, but the Nets are seemingly the only destination possible right now so the Magic are going to get stuck with an absolutely awful trade, especially if Lopez ends up with a max contract. That would be laughable.



Lopez is a one dimensional center that provides solid scoring and nothing else. Bynum rebounds and is capable of protecting the rim at an elite level, and is probably at this point just as capable offensively as Lopez.

Bynum isn't gonna stay in Orlando.

Real talk...if there was a better deal out there for Orlando, they would not be chin deep in negotiations with New Jersey for the past two weeks hammering out a deal to send Howard there...they would be working with other teams to get that better deal.

But, it is Orlando's fault...they should have traded him a year ago or hell, before the deadline...to, of all-teams...New Jersey. They would have been able to get the #6 pick this year, expiring Lopez and Humphries...plus a shit load of other picks in the future.

But, they decided to play the song and dance with Howard and now everyone is in a corner.

Howard wants to go to NJ...but he signed the extension...so, he can't sign there next year unless he wants to take very little in return. That ain't happening...so, he needs to be traded there...basically before Wednesday for him to go where he wants.

Orlando tried for nothing to get him to stay, conned him into signing the extension, and now have very little out there to get a return on Howard in regard to options or assets.

New Jersey needs to get this guy in by Wednesday...and have exhausted every resource to get this guy in here with a team around him to compete with the Heat. So, if they don't get Howard, they still have a good team, but they are stuck in mediocrity purgatory for the next six years at best.

IMO Orlando or any other small market team shouldn't do business based on who will stay, but instead just simply put the best players on the court and let the chips fall. I'm sure they could overpay for Lopez and in the process have a mediocre team for a few years. They should have just let Howard walk, traded everyone away and build through the draft. The team that they will assemble will be good enough to prevent them from getting high draft picks, but too bad to really make the playoffs. That isn't a place you want to be in the NBA.

Well, by trading Howard, they'll shed JRich at the very least...Hedo, at the latest, will be gone by next year, as someone will trade for his massive expiring deal. Unfortunately, they amnestied Arenas, so Hedo will still be on the books. They SnT'd Ryan Anderson, but will re-sign Nelson. So, basically, after all this...they'll be on the books for Lopez, Nelson, Nicholson, Duhon, and Big Baby and scraps and be 7 or 8 first round draft picks richer in the future.

Not necessarily...some of them will be. The Nets have a few first rounders sitting around...one from the Rockets and one from the Lakers (they both come with random protections so they may not come to fruition for a few years), and if they get a third team involved like Cleveland, maybe Cleveland throws in a pick to Orlando.

Plus, Orlando will have shitty picks in their own right so Stern could rig the lotto for them...

Overall, Orlando will end up having 10-12 first round picks over the next 4 years or so to help out that roster and hopefully some cap space.

That's a lot...yeah, you have to build around Lopez or have Lopez be apart of the future...but I guess that is the price of doing business this late on Dwight Howard. If they made the deal last year, they get Lopez and Humphries expiring, a first rounder this year, etc.

The Magic would get Brook Lopez in a sign-and-trade, Luke Walton, Damion James, Shelden Williams, Armon Johnson and three first-round picks -- two from the Nets and a lottery protected first from the Clippers. The Cavs would get Kris Humphries in a sign-and-trade, Quentin Richardson, Sundiata Gaines, a first round pick from the Nets and three million in cash. The Clippers would receive MarShon Brooks.

Considering the overall value the Jazz and Nuggets got for Deron and Melo compared to this it makes it even worse. Trading the most dominant big man entering the prime of his career for an overpaid Brook Lopez and what seems to be no picks without some sort of protection as of now just really sucks. Yes it's a step towards rebuilding but they are barely acquiring any real assets in exchange for the flat out best center in the league, that isn't right. Brook Lopez is not a player you can build around, he is a compliment. This is worse than the Pau Gasol trade.
