    League approves ads on jerseys

Stern gets the ball rolling on the inevitable NASCARization of major American pro sports. Despicable.

The NBA Board of Governors approved a new look for uniforms and a couple of changes in the use of video replay.

LAS VEGAS -- The NBA Board of Governors approved a new look for uniforms and a couple of changes in the use of video replay, commissioner David Stern announced Thursday night.

Stern met with the media after the Board of Governors held their annual summer meeting, and said the league is looking to add possibly $100 million in revenue by permitting small advertising patches on uniforms starting in the 2013-14 season.

"The view is that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail," said deputy commissioner Adam Silver, who is handling the uniform change.

Silver said there are revenue projections from European soccer teams the NBA could use.

Doesn't matter to me. They should put ads on the court, too, while they're at it.

I don't mind it in soccer I've just accepted it the jerseys are still legit. I'm sure at first everyone will hate it in the NBA but grow used to it.

I agree, I don't mind the sponsors on soccer jerseys at all. Except Kappa, fuck Kappa.

This is ridiculous. Just increase the fees for existing advertising that is tied to the league.

Not that anyone here watches it, but the WNBA already does it as well.

Board of Governors vote in favour of advertising on jerseys

The NBA Board of Governors voted this week to allow adverstisements on team jerseys -- starting in the 2013-14 season, each team is allowed a 2"x2" patch.
The patch will also appear on jerseys sold at retail. Purists will surely object, but it's a guaranteed revenue stream in a commercial entertainment industry, so it's not exactly surprising. In other news, the league also tweaked instant-replay rules, allowing referees to stop the game at any point to check for flagrant fouls.
Opinions on this? I know a lot of people are strongly against it but I dont got a problem with it. Id rather the retail jerseys stay the same, but thats obviously not going to happen. This obviously is just the start for this.. advertisement will take over jerseys ala soccer in no time.

I'd be surprised if the advertisements make it to the retail jerseys...unless that's factored in to the ad rate. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not buying a jersey if it's got GEICO ads across it (not that I buy many jerseys now, anyway).

i don't think it will be nascar-like at all so i see nothing wrong with it. the nascar drivers are shown outside their cars for how long? and i don't think they make as much money off tickets and merchandise so the racing teams need to make as much money and get as many sponsors as possible.

as a marketing major and sports fan, i do not believe people would enjoy watching a basketball game with multiple ads on individual jerseys and i think the NBA and other leagues know this. but one sponsor seems tolerable with the success of such deals in soccer across the world
