Jack Taylor from Grinnell College Scores 138 pts in a Game

Grinnell College's Jack Taylor scored an NCAA-record 138 points Tuesday in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible.

The previous record was a 113-point performance from Rio Grande's Bevo Francis.

That record was set in 1954.

Taylor is a sophomore for the Division III school. The 5-foot-10 guard finished 52-of-108 from the field and 27-of-71 from 3-point range. (Yes, Taylor really did launch 71 3-pointers.) He's now scored 185 points in three games this season, meaning he's averaging -- ready for this? -- 61.7 points per game for the Pioneers.

Taylor scored his 100th point with eight and a half minutes to go. His teammate, Griffin Lentsch, set the D-III record 366 days ago when he put up 89 points. On Tuesday he scored just seven.

In the loss, and the greatest overshadowing of a 70-point performance ever, David Larson scored 70 for Faith Baptist.
Product of their system of course, but regardless, DAMN.

He shot the ball every 20 seconds, and his shooting percentage is terrible. He plays DIII for a reason.

He shot a shade under 50%, and 38% from three range. That's not too bad.

That seems about right for a good college shooter.

Right. They don't recruit guys in this system unless they can shoot. They have 15 guys that can all shoot the three-pointer at a high percentage. I'd believe most of our jumpers would suffer by about the 30th one.

Because when they play Grinnell they are well aware what they are in store for. The other team turned the ball over 70+ times.

So if all they recruit is shooters, why was he the only one shooting?

Not sure. They usually have a bunch of dudes shooting and a ton of guys with high points. In this case, I guess they rode the hot hand.

That's the first game of the year anyone scored a ton more than the rest of the team. As you'll see from that box score they got a ton of guys touches.

Yeah, not sure why one guy got so many shots, but their theory is to basically shoot a 3 within the first 5 seconds of the shot clock and run a constant full-court press to create turnovers. Like FedEx said, they usually cycle guys in quite a bit to keep everyone fresh.

Confused why they seem to abandon that and just let kid chuck all day, but whatever. I love the system and the coach is awesome for doing it. read articles before and he just said "We were mediocre, so I did something different"

Coaches are so afraid to change things and it's mind boggling. Why not try something different? I'm amazed more high schools don't integrate a system similar to this or a Don Nelson/D'Antoni style.

Agreed, might as well create some exposure and try something different than just being another random D3 school. Granted, they've had mixed results, but they're fun to watch and read/talk about.

The only problem I see with doing this in high school is that you need to have a lot of really good 3pt shooters, and most high schools just don't have enough of them.
