Spurs Rest 4 Starters, Stern Not Happy

Just another case of David Stern being David Stern. Pops decided gave a big fuck you to Stern and the NBA by not playing Parker, Ginobli, Duncan and Green in a nationally televised game against the Heat. I don't think Stern should be able to do shit personally. Look at the schedules going into the game. The Spurs are on the last game of a 6 game road trip, including their 4th game in 5 nights. Meanwhile the Heat got themselves a nice little Thanksgiving Break basically..playing 1 game the last week, AT HOME against the awful Cavs. Unfair scheduling is unfair. Pops has all the right to rest his guys if he wants to IMO, especially with a big matchup against the Grizz on Saturday. Fuck David Stern.

MIAMI -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sent stars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, plus key role player Danny Green, home for Thursday night's game against the Miami Heat, choosing rest instead of playing them in an early-season showdown.

NBA commissioner David Stern promised repercussions for the move, saying the Spurs will face "substantial sanctions" for their approach to the game.

"I apologize to all NBA fans," Stern said in a statement. "This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming."

Popovich sent the four players on a commercial flight back to Texas instead of playing them in a fourth game in five nights in Miami, a move he said he decided on when the schedule came out in July.

That group will prepare for the team's home game Saturday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, who own the league's best record, instead of playing the Heat, who came in with the Eastern Conference's best record at 10-3.

With Stephen Jackson and Kawhi Leonard out with injuries, the Spurs will take on the Heat without six of their top players. They will have nine players in uniform.

"It's the best thing for our team," Popovich said. "Everybody has to make decisions about their schedule. We've done this before in hopes we're making a wiser decision and not a macho decision. Perhaps it'll give us an opportunity to stay on the floor with Memphis on Saturday night."

The Spurs have rested Duncan, Parker and Ginobili and have not had them travel to various road games several times during the past several seasons as they monitor their aging stars' minutes. Popovich said he included Green this time because he's led the team in minutes during the first month of the season.

The Spurs played their 11th road game of the month in Miami and are at the end of a six-game trip. They are 5-0 on the trip and 9-1 on the road this season. They won at Toronto, Washington and Orlando during the past four days, teams with a combined record of 9-34.

"Every team goes through tough months travelwise," Popovich said. "You don't bitch and moan about it. You deal with it the best way you can."

The Heat had a distinct rest advantage, having not played since last Saturday. They prepared for the Spurs not playing their full roster.

"Every team is different. It's not the first time (Popovich) has done it and it's not a surprise," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We're not going to get caught up in things we can't control."

It's stupid of the NBA to have the 2nd of back to backs be featured nationally.

Stern can eat a dick, I wish more teams did this especially with their aging stars.

Stern has schedule screwed the Spurs for years so I'm glad Pop gave him the finger. The league office doesn't have a leg to stand on since the Spurs still almost won the game with their bench.

I can't wait for the Grizzlies game here on Saturday night, got some free tickets from a friend and the big 3 will be well rested

Stern needs to be focused on other things like how Joey Crawford is still an NBA official.

They played the Wizards and Magic the last two games.. I'm sure Pop could have found AMPLE time to rest them during those games. Stern is an asshat but it cracks me up that people are going "wahhhhh the Spurs were on the road for a long time!"

I agree with Popovich, but I also agree with Hasselbeck. Pop shoulda rested those guys vs. Washington and Orlando, not a nationally-televised game in Miami.

That said, at the end of the day, the coach should have the power to make personnel decisions ... not the commissioner. And Popovich has earned the benefit of the doubt by a wide margin.

I don't agree that he was better off resting his starters against the crappy teams. The level of energy that his starters would burn trying to beat the Heat in a meaningless regular season game is much higher than playing those crappy teams. Meanwhile his bench got seasoning and extra playing time against some of the best competition they could cut their teeth on and will have a ton more confidence if they are called upon. They lost by all of two hoops with their best 3 guys out. That's a scary statement about the team's depth and arguably earns the team more respect than a win with the starters would, because I'm guessing Pop knows and believes his team can stomp the Heat if they wanted to, and if he didn't, he wouldn't be who he is...

I think it's just stupid how big of a deal it is because it was a nationally televised game. Just shows how much of a cash grab the NBA is.

I bet MORE people watched this game due to the hoopla surrounding Pop's decision too. Twitter was going wild during that game since the Spurs were actually competing. I'm sure the game had just as many viewers, if not more than any other game.

Maybe Stern came out with that statement to generate attention, therefore generating more money.

                          Greedy bastard, wouldn't surprise me

Agreed their previous three games were against the Raptors, Wizards and Magic. I'm sure he could have found time to get his guys rest in those games. People can save the "This is Pop resting his guys" crap too, this is November and not March or April when teams generally do this.

Pop was an idiot for doing it on a nationally televised game, because he had to of known it would generate more attention than usual. The NBA is built on its star players, so while it was cool that the team was competitive it doesn't matter. Unless they are truly injured on nationally televised games you star players should be out there, because you owe it to the fans.

IMO Pop did this for competitive reasons against not only Memphis, but Miami too.

Do you think the NBA exist just because dudes want to play basketball? Sports in general is a cash grab and the league uses its stars to full fill that, so when they are playing a showcase game the players need to be on the court.
