    DeMarcus Cousins Suspended Indefinitely

The Sacramento Kings announced Saturday that DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended indefinitely for "unprofessional behavior and conduct detrimental to the team."

DeMarcus Cousins was suspended indefinitely by the Sacramento Kings on Saturday for "unprofessional behavior and conduct detrimental to the team."

Cousins and Kings coach Keith Smart exchanged words in the locker room during halftime of Sacramento's 97-85 loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Smart benched Cousins for the entire second half and ordered him to remain in the locker room.

Cousins also was suspended one game without pay by the NBA for striking O.J. Mayo in the groin during a loss at Dallas on Dec. 10. Following a loss at San Antonio on Nov. 9, the league suspended Cousins two games without pay for confronting Spurs announcer Sean Elliott in a "hostile manner."

"We're trying to set a standard here, and when guys move below that standard, things are going to take place," Smart said after the game in Los Angeles. "We'll just move on to the next game and I'll make some decisions from there."

Cousins, drafted fifth overall in 2010, took responsibility for the incident after the game. The 22-year-old center is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds to go with 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game this season.

"What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. But I was wrong. I was wrong," said Cousins, who scored nine points in 20 minutes. "I'm a player that definitely wants to win every night, and I'm an emotional player. That's never going to change. But I shouldn't have responded back. Something was said, and I just should have stayed quiet. Is it a humbling thing? Yeah, I will say that. I mean, I messed up and I apologize to my teammates for responding the way I did and I'll move on from it."

Cousins' behavior has been well documented going back to high school and his one season at Kentucky.

He has mixed in dramatic and astonishing plays with outbursts against players, coaches, trainers and referees. Cousins clashed often last season with Kings coach Paul Westphal, who was fired after a 2-5 start -- a move that came after he released a statement criticizing Cousins' commitment to the team and excusing him for a game.

After Cousins' workout over the summer in Las Vegas with the U.S. select team, which helped Team USA prepare for the London Olympics, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Cousins "has some growing up to do." Cousins later said he was just playing hard and that rubbed some the wrong way.

The Kings, who have dropped six of seven, host Portland on Sunday.

As usual, this suspension only lasted 1 game. Cousins gunna Cousins.

I'd take a shot on him. He's had 2 awful coaches thus far. Give him a coach who's well respected and I think he'd be more inclined to listen. Also, give the guy the fuckin ball, he's a beast.

Probably the biggest problem with the NBA right here.

Let me know when Cousins averages 25 ppg, is a three time All NBA player, and has a successful multiple decade long NBA & college coaching career like Paul Westphal.

And can we wait more than 30 games before we bury Keith Smart and call him awful?

Cousins is an immature kid who clearly isn't very coachable. You are approaching this in the wrong manner. Sacramento should not be bending over backwards to accommodate Cousins, Cousins should be bending over backwards to accommodate Sacramento, and playing hard for whoever the coach happens to be.

I agree he should play hard and be doing everything he can for Sacramento, we know that's not what the league is about anymore. He's a immature punk that needs some tough love, but we know players run this league. I don't think he'll respect a guy like smart, and there's nobody in Sacto that'll check this kid. He needs a vet to take him under his wing and whip him into shape.

Westphal is a terrific assistant coach but doesn't seem to be able to run the squad.

Smart's biggest issue tends to be around his god-awful inconsistent rotations. The team can't figure out a style of play and frankly, the roster is poorly built. Lots of talent on the roster but the team doesn't mesh well together and doesn't have an identity. Like the issue with Cousins, there is no veteran leadership coming from this roster. The biggest mistake the Kings made was letting Rick Adelman go.

I've watched Sacramento two or three times and did not like what I saw from a strategical standpoint. They ran either ugly isolations or took quick shots after a screen with little ball movement.

I guess what im saying is im not ready to throw my hands and just turn asylum over to the inmates, but I suppose that ship has sailed. Money is not the issue, because other sports don't have this same problem to the extent the NBA does.

Cousins is a legit 7 foot and has the shooting percentage of a bad PG. I'm 100% with you, the strategy is severely lacking. How does Tyreke Evans become a none factor? How do you have a beast of a man who can dominate on the block shooting jumpers? All the PGs on the team are shoot first and the sg's and sf's have never seen a shot they didn't like. Hell, T-Rob looks irrelevant. I don't like the way the team is built at all and don't think they even have a plan on what they are working towards.

I dont think Cousins will ever be the guy on a winning team. He seems like he could thrive if he were the 2nd or 3rd option on a veteran team. He hasnt shown the maturity that many hoped he would have by now.

They don't. Maloofs don't give a shit because they're trying so hard to hold onto the team in face of their financial crisis they simply aren't bothering. Let's not sugar coat this: If ownership gave a crap, they'd bring in a real coach, PAY a real coach, but they don't, so they're happy to wheel out Keith Smart and pretend like it's good for the team when any rational team would have never given him the job in the first place. Whatever his alleged "good relationship" with Cousins was, it ain't there now, and it ain't helping DMC. that was supposed to be his thing, why they hired him. Reality is, ball don't lie, the guy is a terrible coach and it's super easy to see. Maloofs can shitcan the guy the minute they start giving a crap and face no opposition for it ; the guy is a glorified interim coach.

Sacto = nothing but wasted talent.

LOL, you could tell he intentionally did that and then tried to play if off.
