That's where his inefficency comes from. Fine, you don't want to use PER, no biggie let's look at his shot locations and since this year you're excusing him because of distractions we'll do last year (2012):
At Rim: 5.1 APG, 64.7%
3-9 Feet: 2.2 PG, 40.4%
10-15 Feet: 2.3 APG, 45.3%
16-23 Feet: 4.2 APG, 34%
Threes: 2.7 APG, 46.8%
Right there is all you need to know about the inefficency of Rudy Gay. Not a good three-point shooter but a guy who clearly enjoys shooting the long two (the worst shot in the NBA). He's also not that good around the rim which is pretty inexcusable for someone paid as highly as him and someone as athletic as him.
More over, you can look at his assist numbers and what type of shots his assists lead to and you can see he's simply not that good of a player. I don't mind him as a #2 or #3 scoring option on a team, I just don't see why Raptors fans should be all that excited about him, but clearly you are, so whatever.
Here's where I got the data from: http://www.hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Rudy%20Gay
