King, Payton, Pitino, Tarkanian Elected To HoF

Find all the latest NBA news, live coverage, videos, highlights, stats, predictions, and results right here on NBC Sports.

The Hall of Fame is going to fit Gary Payton like a glove.

Payton seemed likely to make the cut out of this year’s Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame finalists — and he should, he was one of the greatest point guards of his generation. This was a no-brainer. But with the Hall sometimes you still have to wonder.

The official announcement isn’t until Monday in Atlanta (at the Final Four) but Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com says he’s in.

NBA legend Bernard King will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2013, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

NBA legend Bernard King will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2013, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

The official announcement will be made on Monday as part of the Final Four in Atlanta.

The New York Post earlier reported that King will be inducted into the Hall.

"He deserves it," said New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, who scored 41 points in Friday's win over the Bucks. "It's about time. He deserved it a long time ago."

With Anthony's performance, he joined King as the only Knicks to score 40-plus points in three consecutive games in franchise history. King, who had been nominated for the Hall of Fame six times, averaged 22.5 points in his 15-year career.

King, a four-time All-Star, spent four seasons in New York and averaged an NBA-best 32.9 points per game in 1984-85. He also played in New Jersey for three seasons, which is where he started and ended his career.

Among those joining King in the Class of 2013 will be Louisville coach Rick Pitino, former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, nine-time NBA All-Star Gary Payton, former Houston coach Guy Lewis, and NBA and Olympic star Spencer Haywood, according to multiple reports.

Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held in September.

Guy Lewis - are you fucking kidding me??????? Did these fools watch the 1983 NCAA championship game? One of the worst coaching jobs I've ever seen!

Anyway, I'm happy for Bernard, one of my favorite Knicks of all time.

Guy Lewis was a terrible Xs and Os coach throughout his long career at Houston. He was a pretty good player, so maybe they are combining his playing and coaching into one resume? I've never understood how the bball HOF works, so I am just speculating.
