Uniform update coming for the NBA this fall. A gold patch signifying a league championship along with a number embossed on top for those teams that have multiple championships.
NBA adds championship patches on uniforms
NBA teams that have won championships — including the Spurs, who are still basking in the glory of their fifth title — will have small gold patches on the back of their jersey collars beginning in the 2014-15 season.
ESPN reported the uniform tweak last week, after which Sports Illustrated’s Ben Golliver followed up with more detail after spotting a handful of the jerseys in Las Vegas during Summer League.
Single winners like Milwaukee and Portland will have patches with an image of the Larry O’Brien trophy. Teams with multiple championships will have a numeric distinction — 5X in the Spurs’ case, although the pictured sample will obviously need to be updated.
