No penalty for Rondo's hard foul on Miller

The NBA says Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo won't be penalized for his hard foul on Chicago's Brad Miller in the closing seconds of Game 5.

League spokesman Tim Frank said Wednesday that the play "stands as called." That means no fine or suspension for Rondo or even flagrant foul points that could lead to a suspension if they accumulate.

With the Bulls trailing by two in the final seconds of overtime on Tuesday night, Miller had a clear path to the basket. But Rondo jumped and hit him across the face and the lay-in attempt sailed wide.

Miller missed the free throws that could have tied it, and the Celtics won 106-104 to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Home town favorites by Stern. Last season KG should have been suspended, Rondo should have. If Howard gets suspended so should Rondo.

because an intentional elbow to the head after the play was over is the same as a hand to the face while a player is going for a layup.

It was a flagrant foul whether you want to admit it or not. Was it worth suspension? No. Was it foul shots plus ball? Yes.

they aren't the same fouls but Rondo's should have been a flagrant. Don't matter anyways, Celts are going to get worked by the Cavs.

I want to know how DHoward didnt make contact and hes suspended a game, Rondo busted old boys grill up and no punishment.

Suck it Celtics fans, im a huge Rondo fan but like a previous poster said it was at the very least a fragrant foul, maybe not suspension worthy but for sure it was flagrant.

There really would be no justification for the NBA to suspend Rondo. One, it was a flagrant foul, but thats it. I don't think the NBA regularly suspends people for flagrant fouls. Two, the incident happened in clear view right in front of three officials, and the officials did not call a flagrant foul. So, if the NBA would suspend Rondo, they are basically admitting the officials blew the call by not originally calling it flagrant. The NBA goes to extreme lengths to protect their officials, even when they bet on the games.

ah, didnt look like it did to me from the pixelated youtube clip but i didnt see the game either.

If Howards elbow made contact he shouldve been thrown out of the game on the spot, why was he not?

The refs said they saw the elbow being thrown, but weren't sure if it made "contact".

By rule an elbow that is thrown that makes contact above the shoulders warrants a automatic 1 game suspension.

Stu Jackson, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball operations, said Howard would have been ejected from the game if any of the referees saw him make contact with his target. Jackson said the contact was clear-cut on replay.

LOL @ rondo not even getting a fine

pretty funny, Howard gets suspended and rightfully so, but to not even levy a fine for slapping miller in the face is hilarious. Any celtics fan who says he was going for the ballis an absolute homer

Here's the difference between the two plays:

                              Intelligence.

Whether you think its a flagrant foul or not on Rondo, it doesn't matter at this point. What Rondo did was realize that Miller was going to have an easy basket, so he made it look like he was going for a block (by looking at the ball) while swiping whatever he could reach to affect the shot. Had he looked at Brad Miller and made it apparent he was hitting him in the face on purpose, you'd probably see a fine of some sort.

Meanwhile, Dwight Howard gets into a fight and can't control his emotions, so throws an unnecessary elbow after a play is over.

One player used intelligence, and the other player couldn't handle his emotions. The intelligent person will always get the advantage.

Reggie Miller exemplifies intelligence. You can say how he played was dirty and what Rondo did was dirty, that's fine I won't disagree with it. But he built his whole career on using intelligence to gain an advantage in the game, and now he's going to the hall of fame.
