Linebacker Greg Ellis has agreed to a three-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.

Ellis was released June 2 by the Dallas Cowboys.

Ellis, the Cowboys' first-round pick in 1998, has played in 162 games, all with Dallas, starting 156. He has 634 career tackles, including 77 sacks. He won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2007, the same season he was named to the Pro Bowl.

He had 36 tackles, 8 sacks and 1 interception last season.

I'm sure we overpaid him but he will contribute immediately and help our defense out a lot so I'm glad he's a Raider.

Good signing, is he going to start? I know they have howard and morrison (?, haven't follwed raiders at all) so is he their 3rd best lb now?

Greg Ellis will be a DE though i am pretty sure which is one of the areas Raiders need help. I hope the Raiders didn't pay too much to get him though.

He will play DEnd. I don't know if this is true or not but apparently Ellis wanted to play DEnd and not OLB and that is one of the reasons why he wanted out of Dallas.

He will start. It's going to be interesting to see what the Raiders do with Burgess now. There are reports saying that the Patriots are interested in Burgess as an OLB and I know that Oakland is interested in draft picks so I'm hoping we can get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him.

If we keep Burgess that's also fine because him and Ellis at the end spots will be a huge upgrade from last season and it will help out our DTs, but if we could get something for Burgess I'm fine with that too so long as its a valuable pick.

Some Oakland fans are also throwing Wilfork's name around in the deal because it'd be a dream come true if we could get him but that's obviously not likely to happen.

aging vet on the downside of his career. The guy wants to be DE, but his best sack totals came when he was standing up. He's just going to Oak, because they offered him the most and know he's done...

Should help rushing the passer which is a nice change since all we got is Burgess to do that.

Trevor Scott did good for his rookie year I hope he improves, but can maybe some Cownoy fans help me because I was wondering how Ellis is against the run

Ellis is a solid DE/OLB but he is recovering from an achilles injury and a down season so we'll c how he fairs in the black hole.

He had 8 sacks last year. If that is a down season for Ellis then I'm excited to see what he can do when healthy.

He had 12 sacks two years ago and 8 last season despite the injury.

He's not spectacular but he is better than any of our other ends and will add some depth to our rotation. Burgess gets hurt every year, Trevor Scott is hurt, Jay Richardson is primarily a run stopper.

Bottom line is that you can never have too many pass rushers and he will add depth, experience, and talent to our DLine so despite what the haters say this is a good move by the Raiders.

Thank you sir for being an informed NFL poster,considering half the people thought he would be playing linebacker in the 4-3 coming from the 3-4 pass rushing linebacker. People somtimes think this is Madden. "Oh he came off the end standing up, we'll just throw him at DE. It's basically the same."

I would consider this a good pickup if:

1. Oakland was contending
2. Oakland ran a 3-4 defense
3. He wasn't coming off injury

I mean it's decent I suppose and I'm sure he'll do better than whatever the Raiders can throw in there. However, he's a one year stop gap--if that.

the only year over 10 was the yr he was standing. Greg Ellis will only get 5-7 sacks from here on out and if thats good enough for you raider fans great, but why not go younger play for the future?

Ellis best years came when there was a threat on the other side. He had quite a few sacks from the DE position when Dal was playing Nickel.

Hes lost a step , but still "solid" can provide a pass rush from the strong side , years at OLB give him some versatlity , and has always been very good against the run.

As long as expectations arent 10 sacks and every down player he's a good pickup.
His next 2-3 years may be alot like Jim Jeffcoats last 2-3 years.
