It's a toss up between Mark Clayton, who will catch every Joe Flacco pass with his god like hands.. or Tony Romo.. who will instantly improve thanks to a special teams coaching change and breaking up with Jessica Simpson.

Of course Donovan McNabb may steal it if Jim Johnson's cancer doesn't distract him.

Don't blame the defense. Brees lost at least 2 or 3 games on his own.
        It's a misnomer..

Good teams overcome mistakes .. Brees had to be damn near flawless for the Saints to win games.

The Saints missed the playoffs in 2008, not because of Drew Brees, but because of a defense that was unable to make a stop when it needed to.

Same problem with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

When the Saints are behind 1-8 points Drew Brees was 3/5 in the td-int ratio with a staggering 70 passer rating.

When the game was tied in the 4th he was 10-6 on TD/INT , decent by most regards but still his 2nd worst situational split behind 1-8 points .

The defense cant be blamed for all of that .

Rodgers also threw 5 fourth quarter ints , 3 of them on game winning/tying drives . While he had a good season for a "rookie" ... the defense can't be blamed for everything.

Btw I can somewhat agree with your statment , was'nt completly disregarding it

Don't get me wrong.. Brees isn't entirely without blame.. but just to show you what I mean by him having to be flawless for the Saints to win.. here are a handful of games that should have went the other way.

Week 2 - Saints fall 29-24 to Washington after blowing a 9 point lead in the 4th .. Brees has two picks.. but a 67 yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Moss with 3 minutes a change remaining is the backbreaker.

Week 3.. New Orleans falls to Denver after Gramatica shanks a makeable FG that'd give them the lead with under two minutes to play.. Brees has 421 yards and a touchdown pass with no turnovers..

Week 5.. Despite Brees throwing for 330 and Bush taking 2 punts back for scores.. special teams meltdowns and bad defense at the end cost the Saints another close game.

Week 15.. Brees does his job.. leading his team back from a late deficit against Chicago.. connecting with Marques Colston on a go-ahead touchdown pass with 3:10 remaining. The Saints would surrender back to back drives resulting in Gould field goals as the Bears basically ended the Saints playoff hopes.

If two of those games go differently, the Saints are 10-5 heading into Week 17 with a shot the NFC South title or wild card spot.

As convenient as it is to blame Brees.. he wasn't the main reason the Saints missed the playoffs. In fact more often than not.. Brees play was the reason the Saints were even in games to begin with.

As for the Packers.. in six of their final seven losses.. the defense would surrender a lead in the 4th quarter/overtime. Entering that fateful stretch they were 4-3 and very much alive in the wide open NFC North.

No he was'nt without blame , I was just trying to show when you look at Brees career apart from one season a pattern emerges , poor 4th quarter stats and poor splits when the game is within 7

The defense can take most of the blame but not all .

And the Packers D was bad but 5 fourth quarter ints with 3 of them being on game tying/winning drives is hardly something to be proud of .

My whole point was to show that Brees and Rodgers werent blameless in them missing the playoffs but It looks like you said that yourself anyways

"Late & Close" (4th Q +/- 7 points) Drew Brees was 20th in the league in passer rating in 2008 (it was something like 72.8, IIRC).

The Buccs game Week 15 or 16 was aprime example of Brees choking it up in the clutch. Three 4th Q int's, and a fourth called back on a penalty.

He cant get out of his own way in close games. It's actually pretty astounding.
