Brett Favre Version 2.0: Mason Reports to Ravens' Camp

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Baltimore Ravens wideout Derrick Mason(notes) reported to the team Saturday, reversing his decision to retire earlier this offseason. He has asked for reinstatement from the NFL and will play for the Ravens under the terms of his current contract. He is expected to be on the practice field Sunday.

“It makes our team better and I’m sure the players are going to welcome him,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. “I’m very pleased that he made it through the mental things that he was going through and that he decided he wanted to be a member of this football team.”

While Mason had previously expressed a hope to negotiate a contract extension with the Ravens, Newsome said terms of Mason’s deal were not changed and didn’t impact his arrival to camp.

“He decided he wanted to play football,” Newsome said.

The arrival is a significant boost for the Ravens, who saw quarterback Joe Flacco develop a comfort zone with Mason last season, seeing Mason catch 80 passes for 1,037 yards and five touchdowns. His presence will once again solidify a receiving corps that appeared to be one of Baltimore’s weaknesses when the Ravens headed to training camp without Mason.

Mason’s abrupt announcement, made on jocklife.com on July 14, caught the team off-guard. He eventually was forced to file retirement papers with the league or he would have been subject to fines for his late attendance to camp.

    ---------------------------------------

Well, good news for Ravens fans I suppose. I just wish these guys could make up their damn minds.

Its really not that surprising, most of the ravens staff said that he was going to be back. He probably just retired in the heat of the moment because of McNairs death.

I thought he was pulling this retirement stunt to get out of going to training camp.

I dont like this being titled Brett Favre 2.0. There was no month(s) long media overexposure, no bullshit, no skipping camp, no discussing it with his wife. He quit, and quietly said fuck that, I'm playing.

Most people thought he did it as a contract ploy to get another year or two added to his deal...when it was obvious the Ravens weren't budging and prepared to go forward with what they had, he had no choice but to come back since...I guess he didn't really want to retire at all.

I think McNair's murder shook up Mason a lot.. a la Warner contemplating retirement after Boldin was nearly decapitated against the Jets last year.

Go put in your two weeks notice at you job three times, and on the last day of each of those times decide that your coming back to work for another year.

Let me know how that works out for you.

                        When did Mason do this?

When do the same rules that apply to a player in the NFL apply to a 9-5 job? Stfu and quit making it seem like what Mason did was a bad thing.

For one.. this analogy is incredibly flawed. Pro football players, especially those of the skill set of Favre or Mason, don't come around all that often.

So that's why there is always a demand for them. That's why there is always a team openly waiting for them.

At your regular 9-5 job.. yeah you may be liked .. but you're replaceable. There are thousands of people who can do what you do and many people that could probably do it better.

That's why athletes are paid so much more than regular people like you and I. It's an extremely high revenue grossing business.. and the star athletes are few and far between.

Not that Derrick Mason will ever be confused with Randy Moss or Larry Fitzgerald.. but there are not many people in the world that can do what he has done.

You post a thread with a simile title and its false. Its not true. You're attempt at humor would be funny, if everyone thought the Favre shit WAS funny. What Favre did/does is uncool. But saying its 2.0 with Mason is dumb and unfair.
