Pats trade for DE Derrick Burgess

    The rich get richer

Adam_Schefter Patriots tradefor DE Derrick Burgess, former Pro Bowler in Oakland. Waiting on terms. But Patriots get another disgruntled Raider -- ie Moss

Adam_Schefter The two teams in on Burgess all along were the Eagles and Pats. Eagles were offering a 3rd-round pick and a player. Pats offer trumped it.

Adam_Schefter I'm told Raiders got more than a third- and fourth-round pick, though nothing confirmed yet. Remember, Pats were scheduled to have 3 2's.

OXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots acquired DE Derrick Burgess in a trade with Oakland for undisclosed draft considerations today. Additionally, the Patriots released OL Al Johnson today.

Burgess, 6-2, 260 pounds, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2001-2004) and the Oakland Raiders (2005-2008). Burgess originally joined the NFL as a third-round draft pick by Philadelphia (63rd overall) out of Mississippi in 2001. He has accumulated 227 total tackles, 47 sacks during his career.

After a four-year career in Philadelphia, Burgess joined Oakland as an unrestricted free agent in 2005 and earned Pro Bowl honors in his first two seasons with the Raiders, registering 16 sacks in 2005 and 11 sacks in 2006. His 16 sacks in 2005 led the NFL and set an Oakland team record for most sacks in a season.

Johnson, 6-5, 305 pounds, was originally signed by the Patriots on March 16, 2009. He is a veteran of six NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2003-06), Arizona Cardinals (2007) and Miami Dolphins (2008). Johnson was originally selected by the Cowboys in the second round (38th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin. Johnson was signed by the Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent on March 5, 2007. Last season, Johnson was placed on injured reserve by the Cardinals with a knee injury and was released from injured reserve on Oct. 21, 2008. He was signed by the Dolphins as a free agent on Nov. 29, 2008 and played in four games for Miami last season, seeing reserve action at both guard and center.

I'll piss my pants if Oakland got one of the Pats' three 2nd rounders but I doubt that's the deal. At least a 3rd + 1 for sure would be fine too considering we had to get rid of Burg one way or another.

oh give me a break. Just because they're the Patriots they aren't allowed to make a move or improve their team? If the Eagles got him for the same price you would have no problem with it. Take the whiney complaining act about New England elsewhere because it's pretty lame.

On another note, can Burgess play the stand up OLB spot in a 3-4 raider fans?

Hopefully never. We need a team to laugh at all year round.

More stupidity from Al Davis. Now he has no defense. You can't expect Asomougha to do everything, even if he covers 1/3 of the earth or whatever the fukk the Raiders coach said. Should've asked for a young DE prospect from the Pats to fill the void.
They are nothing like the Yankees of Football , they have been building their team from players who nobody wanted (for the most part) on free agency . It's called good GM work and coaching while sticking to the core system . It's not like they are overpaying all the top talent

....And now they're the favorites. Good god the Patriots always pull the trigger at the right now.

....And now the Raiders can rebuild even more.
