    Stafford Named Starter for Lions

    http://www.everyjoe.com/squibkick/ma...ter-for-lions/

Coach Jim Schwartz is very careful about how he handles the egos on the Detroit Lions. You might think there should be no egos after losing all of their games last year, but this is a whole new roster. Looking down the roster of starters for the second exhibition game only yields 5 familiar starting faces to the Squibster.

Getting to the point here, Schwartz named Matt Stafford to begin the 2nd exhibition game, just as he named Daunte Culpepper to begin the first exhibition game.

You can make out of this what you want, but mentioning Matt Stafford to begin the game puts him on an equal footing with Daunte Culpepper to the fans. Now Coach Jim Schwartz may have different ideas, but he is being very careful to take care of his young quarterback. Will Culpepper be the starter once the season begins as most writers have assumed? If Schwartz knows this already, then he is instilling confidence in his young rookie.

But all that aside, Schwartz knows the future for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League is with Stafford and not Culpepper. That does not mean Culpepper won’t start this year or even most of this year, it just means Schwartz wants to keep Stafford encouraged and give him some meaningful work.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. --The Detroit Lions announced today that they have traded QB Kevin O’Connell to the New York Jets for an undisclosed future draft pick. The team also released DE Ikaika Alama-Francis, CB Cletis Gordon and WR Adam Jennings.

Seven players were signed today by the Lions to the team’s practice squad, including: WR John Broussard (San Jose State), TE Carson Butler (Michigan), RB Tristan Davis (Auburn), LB Zack Follett (California), C Dan Gerberry (Ball State), TE Dan Gronkowski (Maryland) and T Lydon Murtha (Nebraska).
Just broke if i see it right, waiting for epsn or somewhere else to announce it, if they haven't already...

I don't wanna see him murdered out there cause of our o-line, but whatever, if that's what they wanna do...we'll go 3-13.

    RIP West

Stafford will struggle throughout the year. They'll be lucky to get 4 wins.

I kinda wanted to see what Daunte Culpepper could do, then around week 4 or 5 put in Stafford.

            Oh well.

I lol'ed at ESPN's article. They rushed to get it out there so right now all it says is:

As long as he wins one game, Detroit will treat him like a hero.

I'm assuming Twitter is the reason for this.

... I knew this would happen and got laughed at when I said it would before the draft.

Stafford is going to get killed behind that O-Line. Backus cannot protect shit and Cherilus is a penalty waiting to happen. Plus, our interior line is unable to get even the slightest push to open up the running game.

Overall... I see Stafford in a David Carr situation. The Lions will have to rely a lot on him and as such, he'll either take a ton of sacks and never reach his potential or have to play like Dan Marino and fire the ball out there quickly. Personally, I think it will be another David Carr.

At least he has CJ and an up and coming TE to help him out, though. And Kevin Smith is good enough to alleviate some pressure.

                            I loved the Stafford pick...

BEST CASE: John Elways - highly doubtful he becomes top 5 all-time, but this is his ceiling...strong armed QB with great leadership and poise...
WORST CASE: Rex Grossman - can make all the throws but never learns to take what the defense gives him....

he has shown great poise in the pocket, but still makes the dumb throws... hopefully he throws a shit load of INTs early and learns from them... people always point to Manning throwing a ton of picks his rookie year, but most of those came in his first fours games (3 TDs to 11 INTs)...he ended the year throwing 23 TDs to 17 INTs...

                            let the Stafford era begin!

Damn, Culpepper's foot must not be 100%. Thats the only reason Stafford should be starting. I didn't want him to go in until mid-season. I do think the situation is a little bit different than David Carr though. He has one of the best receivers in this game and a good running back in Kevin Smith. Plus, even though it was pre-season, the Lions offensive line didn't look all that bad.

The one thing that will kill Stafford, is the defense. We're going to be behind in a lot of games, and when you're behind, usually you have to start throwing more. If our defense was good, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
