    Supporting a team while it's good/bad

We had this conversation in the chatbox for a good 45minutes (7 or 8 of us) and the opinion (to me) was suprisingly split

We were discussing how teams numbers go down when they suck . And fans of a few sucky teams were talking about how the owner is making no effort to progress the team so why should they pay for tickets or buy anything that gives money to the owners .

I was always a person who thinks you should support your team whether they are good/bad/indifferent but clearly some others disagreed .

So basicly my question is , if you are currently supporting a sucky or average team , do you watch/go to games? Or do you like some people , avoid watching them or at least watch them much less than in the "good days"?

And if you don't watch them as much as you did when they were good or "trying to be good" do you think that makes you any less of a fan or is it the same?

I watch every game and support my team, no matter if we're 16-0 or 0-16. It'll never change.

The Rams have won 5 games in the last 3 years. Every Sunday, I wake up, put on my Rams gear, and fire up the Sunday Ticket and take my medicine. I even head to the sports bar, with pride, when I don't feel like sitting in the house.

I suffered through the 90's too, and it made me appreciate the Greatest Show era.

You arent a real fan if you're the guy who takes his GF to the mall on Sundays or hides the gear in the basement when the team is down.

I'll support my teams as long as they're making a real effort to contend. I don't even bother rooting for Purdue football anymore because it's clear they don't care. If they don't care I don't see why I should either. So I can see why fans of teams like the Raiders would just give up.

I've had season tickets since 03 and not once have I thought about selling them, even through 6-10 and 5-11, it makes the 13-3's and 11-5's that much sweeter when they happen.

I've also only left a game early once in that time, and that was in 07, when the Colts were beating us like 30-0 and Peyton was out of the game before halftime, and it was entirely evident the team was giving 0 effort. So, like Killa Pand said, as long as I see the guys out there giving their all, even if they aren't very good, I'll watch them. If I see guys dogging it or otherwise, then I'll turn it off or leave.

If you support your team, you support your team through the good and the bad. If you don't, then you aren't a fan.

I am a Philly fan, so I have been through more down years than not, but all I look for is effort from the players. If they are not even putting a 100% out there, I will call them out. Play your heart out no matter how bad your team is. Prime examples, B-Dawk, Chase Utley, JRoll, Mike Richards, Eric Desjardins, John Leclair and yes even AI no matter how much he bitched about practice.

I've supported the Lions for a while now. I officially declared my fanship maybe 8 years ago, but I was always a fan when I was younger. I've seen one playoff game and I was only 9. From 2000-2007 I had season tickets, we gave them up for a number of reasons. Bill Ford as an owner, not having fun while there, lack of information given out by the stadium (other games stats, injuries, highlights, etc.), the stupid PR gimmicks, plus a few more smaller reasons. But I still wake up and watch them every week, and if they're not on TV I find a way to watch them. I haven't bought anything in relation to the organization in years, I can still keep my money from an awful owner and support my favorite team.

See I agree with this. If an owner isn't doing his job and putting a decent product on the field/court/ice, fans have every right not to buy his product. Doesn't mean they're not true fans - they're just expressing their frustration with the current regime. I haven't paid much attention to the Knicks in years, and I've followed them since 1970. Dolan is a horrible owner who's turned this franchise into a joke the past eight years - why pay money to watch a garbage team? I felt the same way about the Giants during the 70s.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect George Steinbrenner. He's no saint, but he gives the fans what they want.

Been a Saints fan my entire life. I remember when they were the most feared defense in the league. Too bad they couldn't move the ball. I never miss a Saints game. Same goes for LSU. I like to test people on LSU trivia. Just to see how long they have really been following the Tigers. I remember when Gerry DiNardo could not get much done at LSU. Even though he had arguably one of the best LSU RB Tandems they ever had in Kevin Faulk and Rondell Mealey. DiNardo got them in the top 25 but could never really excel further than maybe the 14 spot

For me when my team(Panthers) are bad I don't stop watching the team play but I don't get as enthusiastic about it. It's hard to get pumped up for your team when they start going on a losing streak or have a bad season.

As a niner fan you appreciate winning more when you no longer have it. Having to go through the past few years is rough and at least this season has been somewhat interesting despite heart breaks like the Minnesota game.

I find that when my team is not going to do it I start to watch for secondary reasons. Like smaller "victories" that I enjoy liking seeing the QB get 3,000 yards or the HB 1,000, etc. Seeing if some players can play well enough to go to a Pro Bowl, etc, etc. Since the lack of playoffs means that I have to start making up my own reasons.

I'll support my team forever. I watched most of the games last year when we went 0-16. I've watched every game this year and even though we aren't good and I know we aren't good, I still get mad.

If you do not support your team through the bad times, you don't deserve to celebrate in the good times. When the Lions are eventually good, I'm going to be pissed as all hell at all the fake fans that will come out of nowhere and pretend they were fans. Oh well, the real fans will always know who they are and will appreciate success much more.
