This is why you don't call timeouts when the other team is kneeling

I really just love how this article fails to mention that USC took a knee, UCLA called timeout, then USC threw the TD pass.

    VID LINK: http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=293320030

It wasn't pretty, but USC did what it needed to do to beat UCLA 28-7, a victory that is sweeter considering the Trojans recent travails.Heck, the Trojans even scored a gratuitous touchdown to rub it in at the end with a 48-yard pass, which should only serve to further embitter the rivalry.

USC rubs it in against UCLA
    By Ted Miller

It wasn't pretty, but USC did what it needed to do to beat UCLA 28-7, a victory that is sweeter considering the Trojans recent travails.

Heck, the Trojans even scored a gratuitous touchdown to rub it in at the end with a 48-yard pass, which should only serve to further embitter the rivalry.

The benches briefly cleared as UCLA -- not without justification -- seemed irritated by the best throw of the night from Matt Barkley.

Was it a class moment for Pete Carroll?

    No.

But this sort of thing apparently is what the cool kids are doing now -- see Stanford's Jim Harbaugh going for two with a 27-point lead late in its win over the Trojans.

The difference was simple: Turnovers. UCLA had four. USC one. The Trojans first score came on an interception return. Their second on a 29-yard drive following another Kevin Prince interception.

The Bruins, with Kevin Craft coming off the bench at quarterback, made a late move, cutting the Trojans advantage to 14-7 with 5:41 left on a drive in which they twice converted on fourth down.

But USC answered with a 73-yard touchdown drive. UCLA got the ball back with 1:30 left, but turned the ball over on downs. And then USC threw a bomb.

UCLA finishes its season 6-6 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-10. The Bruins are bowl-eligible, but must hope that they can fill an at-large spot for a bowl game that can't fulfill its contracts. It appears that the Humanitarian Bowl is interested.

USC improves to 8-3 and 5-3. It plays host to Arizona on Saturday. If the Trojans win, they likely will go to the Holiday Bowl.

Doesnt matter if they called a timeout, that was a dick move regardless and anyone that tries to defend it is an idiot.

Well call me an idiot then.

You play until the final whistle. Who cares if they ran up the score. I never have a problem with teams running up the score. If you don't want them to score again then stop it.

I've always been under the impression that when a team takes a knee its an indication that both teams have decided the game is over, so the rational is to lets run out the clock. UCLA taking a timeout could be seen as an indication that they didn't believe the game was over. Calling a timeout also could be seen as a dick move as well, which is probably why USC took the score.

My thoughts exactly. If UCLA calls a timeout, then they don't think the game is over. I don't know how many timeouts UCLA had left, but still, if you're calling timeout that late in the game and you're on defense, you better be ready to play defense on the next play.

          Sorry. UCLA deserved that one.

R u kidding me? USC was taking a knee to end the game then the UCLA coach took a time out for no reason at all, i would of done the same thing Pete Carroll did. The UCLA coach was being a dumbass.

I can't stand when people say this.

When I was a kid learning about sports, both watching and playing, my father taught me the importance of sportsmanship. Part of that is you don't run up the score. The idea is to play hard, and hopefully win. Running up a score, just because you can, lacks class.

PLAY UNTIL THE FINAL WHISTLE ITS THEIR JOB TO STOP ME RAAAWWWWRR is an awful attitude. Show some class.

sidenote-this really has nothing to do with the thread topic. i'm just tired of this "it's their job to stop it" bullshit.

Well thats why their on the team, they are there to play defense, how about ucla shows some class by not taking a timeout when the game was clearly over. Plus it was a rivalry game.

Hard to feel sorry for UCLA since they called the timeout. Oh well.

I have a feeling this is gonna get blown out of proportion very quick.

But again, the idea is to win. Beyond that, what does intentionally running up the score accomplish? Nothing.

I love how ESPN is making USC look like the bad guy. UCLA called the timeout. If anything, it evens out.

Pete Carroll bitched to Jim Harbough after the Stanford game about making a statement going for 2...

This is not different at all. Petey was making a statement here... I would have no problem with what he did if he hadn't bitched to Harbough about the very same thing before.

Not the same thing at all. The score was 48-21 with 6 minutes left in the game. Stanford went for 2 simply because they wanted to put 50 up on USC.

UCLA calling timeouts is all the difference here. If you're going to call a timeout then you better be ready to play football and make a stop on the next play, no matter what the playcall is.

And Pete Carroll did not bitch about Stanford going for 2:

MASON: What do you think, now a couple of days removed, of Harbaugh going for the two-point conversion?

CARROLL: Well, really, even since the time that it happened, you know, I haven’t bothered with it, and I know everybody else has and taken a lot of time to kinda discuss it and all. I think, you know, it is what you think it is, you know, it’s a statement that you can take away that maybe they were trying to accomplish something that seems out of the ordinary, you know, I don’t really care, to tell you the truth, it doesn’t matter.

And when you look at it like, uh, they’re ahead in the game and they’re in command of it, they really get to do whatever they want to do, and it doesn’t bother me to worry about it anymore, you know what I mean? Jim came out and said what he wanted to say, you know, a couple different times about it and, you know, to me it’s dropped, I don’t care. Will I forget it? No, I’m not forgetting it. But uh, you know, to me, it’s in the past.
