Jerome Bettis: Cowher Wants Giants Head Coaching Job

Jerome Bettis believes Bill Cowher is eyeing NY Giants' head coaching job

Isn't it great how the NFL works? Here we are sitting around, trying to figure out if and when Perry Fewell will sign on as Giants defensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Jerome Bettis is already looking at who the next head coach of the team will be.

The retired running back said Thursday in an interview with Sirius/XM's "Mad Dog Unleashed" show with Chris Russo he believes his former coach, Bill Cowher, has his eye on the Giants' job that currently belongs to Tom Coughlin.

    Here's the transcript:

Host/Chris Russo: “Will we ever see Cowher on the field again?”

Jerome Bettis: “You’re going to see him up close and personal. I think he’s going to be with the Giants. I believe he’s going to be with the Giants. I think that’s the team that he really coveted. This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he’s been very close to them. … He’s known them very well and was on the inside track, before the Giants won the Super Bowl, for that job and I think he’s holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.”

Russo: “So you think if Coughlin didn’t make a run you think Cowher would have gotten the job.”

Bettis: “He would have definitely gotten the job and if Coughlin doesn’t get that team back in the right direction next year I think they’ll pull the plug.”

Russo: “That’s a very tough call. I’m not sure. He’s older, Tom. But you think Cowher is going to sit…”

    Bettis: “That’s what he’s doing.”

Russo: “You think the Giants is what he’s got his eyes on.”

Bettis: “That’s where he’s got his eyes. … Let me tell you the one thing I do know. I do know, because he told me, he doesn’t want to go anywhere that doesn’t have an established quarterback. He said he’s tired of doing the let me find a quarterback thing because in Pittsburgh he never had a quarterback until Roethlisberger and then he was like, ‘Hey, I’m ready to go. I finally got a quarterback.’ That’s not what he’s going to do again. He’s going to have an established quarterback wherever he goes.”

Of course, none of this matters if Coughlin leads the Giants to a successful 2010 season. So why don't we just file this away for now, huh? We'll revisit if and when we must, okay?

Unless the team spectacularly tanks next year I don't see Coughlin losing his job.

However if they did and he was, Cowher would be an excellent replacement

Took Coughlin 4 Years to win a SB in NY
Took Cowher 15 Years to win a SB in Pitt

Cowher isnt the only one eyeing the position. It is a dream job for people. John Fox, Bill Billicheat and Romeo Crennel would die for that position.

Is it really that prestigious a position?

Coughlin was preceded by Jim Fassel, Dan Reeves and Ray Handley.

Giants is a big time job.

Handley didnt work out, but came from Fat Tuna.

Reeves was always a big coach.

Fassel was a hot coordinator, a little off the radar for a team like NYG, but he worked out.

Coughlin is another big time coach.

The Giants are a well respected, big time franchise.

Yes actually. All 3 of those coaches as well as others have said they wanted that position. Giants are Class A Organization. Family Organization that doesn't have an insane and retarded owner (Redskins, Cowboys, Oakland, ect)

Ex-Steelers RB Jerome Bettis said Thursday that Bill Cowher hasn't accepted a head coaching job the past couple of seasons because he's "holding out" for the Giants job.
New York is "where he always wanted to be," said Bettis. "The Mara family, he's been very close to them ... and was on the inside track -- before the Giants won the Super Bowl -- for that job." Bettis, who is tight with his former head coach, believes Cowher will end up coaching the Giants eventually. If Tom Coughlin misses the playoffs again next year, it could happen as soon as 2011

Being head coach in Dallas is nothing compared to being a coach for the NY Giants. In Dallas these days you are always second behind Jerry Jones.

That would be true if Jerry Jones wasn't the owner.
Because he is, that's not the case.
No great coach wants the owner telling him what to do.
And Jerry Jones will never relinquish control.

                              Sadly true.

The position is no longer what it should be.
