    Thoughts on conference championship games...

    Jets-Colts

*The Jets offense probably played as well as it could. I was impressed with Mark Sanchez for the most part. The Jets defense played well early, but Peyton Manning figured out their blitzes and Collie and Garcon made several big plays.

*Jerricho Cotchery is really good...if he was on a different team he'd probably be a Pro Bowler.

*I think the Colts getting the Collie TD right before the half was the big play. It gave the Colts confidence that they could strike quickly against the Jets D. It seemed like the 2nd half was Manning throwing quick passes to Garcon and Collie, and the Jets didn't have an answer for it.

*Overall, an enjoyable game with the better team winning.

    Saints-Vikings

*A very strange game. When it was over, I was so drained I felt like I had played in the game. I knew the game would be controversial when I saw Pete Morelli would be officiating the game. He is an awful official, and I don't understand how he's gotten postseason assignments in the last two years.

*For all the talk of the game turning into a track meet, the Saints offense went into a deep-freeze after the game was tied 14-14. The Saints would run the ball on 1st down, run the ball on 2nd down, then fail to convert on 3rd and 5. This process repeated itself about 10 times until OT.

*Favre was getting beat up, and I'm sure that will factor into his retirement decision. Quite a few cheap shots, some were called, some weren't. Still, the Vikings moved the ball pretty easily on the Saints.

*The game was basically the Vikings fumbling opportunities away. Peterson was so bad that you really didn't want to see him enter the game.

*A lot of questionable officiating decisions, but the phantom pass interference on Ben Leber in OT was the costliest and worst. First, it wasn't even a pass pattern...it was Brees trying to heave the ball out of bounds while being sacked. The official standing next to Leber and Thomas on the sideline who had the clearest view of the play signaled incomplete. The official 20 yards upfield, whose view of Leber was blocked by Thomas, was the one who threw the flag. Pete Morelli should have overruled the flag, because the call was the responsibility of the official with the unobstructed view.

*The sequence at the end of regulation for the Vikings was ridiculous. IIRC, they made it to the Saints 40 with about 1:40 left on the clock, but then they went into hyper-conservative mode. OK, perhaps they thought Peterson would break one. It didn't happen, and it appeared that the Vikings were content to have Longwell try a 50-yarder to win the game. The 12 men in the huddle penalty AFTER the time out was killer, because it probably forced the Vikings into a passing situation. Still, the Vikings were in relatively decent shape. The problem IMO was one of the dumbest play calls I've ever seen. On a key 3rd down, with a gimpy 40-year old QB, you decide then to call a rollout play? First, its a play you haven't used all game. Second, Favre is no threat to run. Why not just call a quick pass to Rice or Berrian? Favre was able to consistently complete those for much of the game. The rollout play was an awful call, but IIRC Troy Aikman actually agreed with the play call!! You've got to be kidding me! Do you want Favre, injured ankle and all, throwing on the run while rolling out to the short side of the field?

Probably the most exciting day of football in a long time. Both games managed to hold my attention which has been rare as of late.

Pete Moreli is one of the, if not, the worst ref in football.

Besides, he sounds fucking "slow" and certainly shows it.

Guy needs to gtfo but he certainly fits the mold of the hyper policing of football rules.

I dunno, Morelli was the ref who threw the least amount of flags per game this year. I remember that tidbit because Ravens fans were estatic when he got chosen to call the Ravens/Pats playoff game. Can he really be called a "hyper policing" ref if he throws less flags than anyone else?

Ron Winter is the worst ref in football IMO.

In any event, the PI on Leber was a joke. The ball was also basically uncatchable. It was a terrible, terrible call, you can't have any game, ESPECIALLY a playoff game, decided on something like that - which it basically was. There were also a number of (what I thought) late hits on Favre that were not called. It was a poor effort by the refs.

After the the Steelers/Colts game with the Polamalu interception fuck up, and then the blatant false start/offiside which he decided they'd just call nothing cause he didn't know what the fuck to do.......and he was also involved in the phil dawson FG fuck up vs the ravens....

I guess i just catch that guy every time he's retarded.

Yeah, I would agree with your assessment of Morelli. He is not hyper policing...he is just very inconsistent with the calls he does make, and, IMO it seems that the timing of these calls is the killer. Like someone else mentioned, I don't think Morelli's crew called a single offensive holding penalty, and on the Leber PI call the Saints basically tackled the Viking pass rushers.

Ron Winter is the true hyper police ref, but IMO he keeps things fair by consistently calling penalties on both teams. Morelli is like the college basketball ref who doesn't call a foul all game but then blows his whistle on the last play of the game.

You can not make that call in OT of a championship game. The hold penalty on 3rd and long on the previous set of downs was marginal at best as well. The refs basically gave the Saints 2 new sets of downs, the last of which put them in FG range. Not saying the Saints didn't get a few bad calls either, but when they needed them the most, the Saints got the call.

I'm not sure how the refs missed the knee dive on Favre on the play that rolled his ankle either. I really thought he was out of the game the way he looked on the training table afterward. He sacked up big time to even get back in that game. I will be shocked if that cheap shot doesn't draw a major fine from the league even though it wasn't called.

The Vikings-Saints game was, as senser said, draining.

At one point, I think it was when the Vikings were down 28-21 and going in for the tie, I realized "there is no way in hell they win this game, I don't care if they score here...teams with this many turnovers don't win football games like this"...

That last pass by Favre was about as bad a blunder as I've seen in a while. Favre threw away a potentially monumental season with that play. All he needed to do was take one step forward and get past the LOS and it sets Longwell up for the game winning FG. Instead, he does something he learned not to do in Pop Warner.

On the play where Favre rolled his ankle, the Vikings also got away with a huge hold on Will Smith, or else there would have been three players hitting Favre. The hold is obvious on the replay from behind the end zone.

Like you said, refereeing was bad yesterday, both ways. (and of course, as I type this, I hear Skip Bayless say the only bad call was the pass interference against Tracy Porter in the end zone. Idiot).

Also, I'm tired of replay reviews. All it does is slow down the game, and seemingly only raise more questions.

For as draining as the NFC game was, I felt like the quality on show was HORRIBLE . Maybe they were nervous? I could understand that considering both teams haven't been that far in some time but some of the play was just bad . I'm expecting to see a better Saints team in two weeks

As for the AFC game ... it went exactly like I thought . The Jets used up all the trick plays they had and once Indy calmed down they had nothing to hit them with . One dimensional teams simply cannot beat the Colts [Dolphins are the only team who have came close recently] . You have to be able to keep some balance on offense and pass on early downs . The run run pass game just doesn't work against our style of defense . I would also like to add that Manning put in one of the best post-season performances I have seen in a while [especially the second half] . Made the best D in the NFL look normal

Speaking of learning fundamentals in Pop Warner..I think the Saints need to go back to the practice field this week and just practice falling on loose footballs. It's drilled into players that if the ball is loose just fall on it. Worst thing that happens is you don't gain yards but gain possession and a best case scenario is you can get up without being downed. The Saints had chances in that game to stick the dagger into the Vikings earlier than the Harvin fumble but repeatedly tried to pick the ball up instead of falling on it and it changed possession.

So true. I was sitting there like WTF just fall on the damn thing. I mean how in the fuck do you tackle AP and let him get up and out hustle you to the ball. Tracy Porter was too busy trying to pick it up and run he never could get possession.

I'm still very happy for my team.

On the subject of terrible refs, Tony Corrente referred the to Jets as the "New York Giants" at the opening coin toss yesterday.

                          ...yeah.

I almost broke my tv after they didnt fall on it when peterson fumbled and he beat three defenders to cover it. That shit drove me insane.

i don't remember who exactly it was, but whoever blatantly missed the pick up on the Peterson fumble that shot backwards about 10 yards needs to get Tom Cable'd. That's just inexcusable in a close game.
