Goodell wants to Ban 3-point stances

Roger Goodell: Ban on 3-point stance possible - BostonHerald.com

A ban on the three-point stance? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says it’s possible.

Concerned about concussions, Goodell said the league will keep looking for ways to make the game safer. Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation” hours before the Super Bowl, he didn’t rule out the idea of banning the three-point stance for linemen to reduce the ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.

“As you’ll see tonight, you’ll see a lot of players that never get down in a three-point stance,” Goodell said yesterday. “So it’s possible that would happen.”

While science is still trying to determine the long-term effects of concussions, Goodell said, the league has made progress in increasing awareness about the severity of such injuries.

“For many years the culture had been quite different - that concussions weren’t serious injuries,” he said. “I think we have changed that culture and made sure that people understand they are serious, and they can have serious consequences if they’re not treated properly.”

Goodell has met with NFL competition committee co-chair Rich McKay to begin evaluating possible rules changes.
Really? When not just scrap tackling and give every player pillows to hit with instead.

He's just playing to the media. It's not a realistic idea. He would never do that.

Wouldn't he? If you TOUCH a qb's helmet its a flag now. Not slap it, not spear it, just touch it. I wouldn't put it past him.

God damn that asshole Goddell for not wanting to have his organization continue to get sued when his ex-players can barely talk at age 40.

Banning 3 point stances won't keep RB's and LB's. The two positions who get the most concussions from getting um. Unless you ban tackling ppl are going to get them, the best thing you can do is improve the equipment, watering down the game every year isn't going to help.

Actually improving equipment will not dramatically change it. If there are helmets, there will be concussions because players are going to still crash heads, lead with their heads, etc.

The only thing they could do is get rid of the helmets, which they'll never do.

And while RB/LB get the more high profile concussions, linemen have the most long term problems because as opposed to BIG concussions, they have just continued trauma to the head, so they actually have it the worse.

That's why he mentioned the 3-point stance, but he won't do that. That dramatically changes the entire way the game is played.

You all do realize that any rules changes have to go through the competition committee, right? Not like Goodell can just make it illegal on a whim...

This isn't exactly Goodell's idea either. It's been a theory/idea floating around for a few years now. Don't agree with it but to act as though Goodell dreamed it up is absurd.

The NFL is getting too safe. I mean, yea, there are a lot of injuries. But you join the NFL knowing that any play could be your last. Before he retires, Goodell will probably ban tackling and make them play flag football

There was an article a few months back that said lineman are just as susceptible to concussions. A cumulation of smaller collision can cause a concussion just as easily as a large collision. So linemen are at just as much risk if not more.

I think this is a stupid idea, but they've gotta do something.
