Fail for not knowing what defense your team runs.

I think he could be an effective pass rusher in a 4-3. In most 3-4's, the OLB will play a 5-tech or outside shoulder of a tackle, which is where a weakside end will end up playing in a 4-3 in a lot of situations. A 3-4 OLB is usually backed off the line of scrimmage a yard or two, but with the right kind of player the transition can be made easily.

Porter is 6-3, 255 pounds, and he could transition nicely into a weak-side end in a base 4-3. With his age (and how he's struggled against the run in the past), he's probably not an every down player anymore, he'd probably play purely in passing situations. He has played defensive line in the past (college), so its not like he's never played the position. Besides, with all of the various fronts shown by NFL teams, he's likely played with his hand in the dirt before.

        That's what I was thinking too - though, at 33, he's a bit young for their D.

Best he could be in a 4-3 is a situational WILL in nickel packages. Playing 4-3 end every down, having to line up mask to mask with huge, long-armed OT's would be totally disastrous.

Like I said, I don't fancy him an every down player in a 4-3 at DE. I see him as a good pass rusher who can come in at weakside end on passing downs.

I like him in S.F. They could use a pass rusher. They have some younger OLB's who are situational themselves, and I think they could develop a good rotation around Lawson/Porter or Haralson/Porter and make everybody happy. Plus they get to steal him away from the Cards!

This was bullshit grand standing by Porter to cover his own ass. Reality was, Porter was getting released by Miami way before this. He just created the media hoopla to make it seem like he asked for it and got his wish. Reality was, he was gone anyway per Parcell's decision.

As for Porter. Fantastic 2008 campaign that was crucial to our success. This past season......atrocious. As if he fell off a cliff in the skill department. This guy is nothing more than a situational pass rusher now, and even in that he is only average. He simply doesn't have the burst and power he did 2 years ago. Or, you can look at it as the other teams figured him out real quick and have found how to contain his rejuvenated play as of late.

I know his cousin pretty well and have met the guy once or twice. I wish him the best, even if he can be an arrogant punk sometimes.
