Seahawks trade for QB Charlie Whitehurst

    Not sure about this one..

The Seattle Seahawks are banking on Charlie Whitehurst eventually being a worthy successor to incumbent quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes).

According to ESPN, the Seahawks have agreed to a move to obtain Whitehurst from the San Diego Chargers.

Per the report, Seattle will send a 2011 third-round draft pick and move down 20 positions in the second round of this year’s draft to San Diego for Whitehurst. The Seahawks don’t have a third-round pick in this year’s draft, so they had to work out a trade to acquire him.

Plus, the Seahawks have agreed to a two-year contract with the former Clemson quarterback that will average $5 million annually.

Whitehurst has performed well during the preseason, but hasn’t played in a real NFL game while toiling behind starter Philip Rivers(notes) and backup Billy Volek(notes).

Whitehurst is a player with upside, but he’ll need to do a lot to justify the Seahawks’ hefty investment.

He appears to be the QB of the future now.

My -theory- and I could be wrong on this, is Jeremy Bates really wanted this guy because he's basically a poor mans Jay Cutler. Great size (6-4, 220), awesome arm strength, good mobility, etc etc.

Bates LOVED Cutler.. sad to say, I don't think Whitehurst is anywhere near Cutler.. but who knows, maybe learning behind Rivers for awhile while being coached up by Norval made him a decent player.

Wow, that's a lot for a guy who may only be a back-up, unless they plan to start him.

I'm definitely not complaining. It's hard to say whether Whitehurst will be good enough to ever start but we all knew he was never going to start in San Diego. Gooood trade

I'm glad the Cardinals didn't go through with this. That seems like a lot to give.

That's what I thought about Jay Cutler... And you know Norv Turner won't be there very long. No one is safe in the NFL now a days.

it all revolves around the packers haha

                      Hasselbeck- ex Packer

Whitehursts dad played for the Packers- late 70s early 80s I believe.

I know it doesnt matter haha , just sayin'

I hope he finds moderate success

I trust Carroll knows what he's doing.

It's hard to know what to expect from Whitehurst.
I'm kinda surprised Seattle didn't try to make a conditional trade, rather than give up a day one pick.
The contract is also kinda surprising. Why not just give him a one-year deal?

Too much given up. You can get a guy of the same quality(maybe even better) in the second or third round.

What's the point if Hasselbeck starts all 16 (which he will barring injury)?

Hasselbeck is 35, and is a UFA after this season.. Whitehurst likely won't start this year unless Matt gets hurt again -- which lately has been a formality more than a question.
