Annual Brett Favre Saga Begins

The annual Brett Favre mating dance officially has begun.

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress was spotted Monday in Favre's hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss., presumably to talk about whether -- some might say, "when" -- the 40-year-old quarterback will rejoin the team he nearly took to the Super Bowl last season.

Childress showed a deadpanned sense of humor when asked by WDAM-TV why he was in town.

"You can fill in the blanks," he said.

Favre, who underwent ankle surgery last month, has been throwing with players from nearby Oak Grove High School. On Monday, he was joined by Childress at a 7-on-7 prep passing camp on the University of Southern Mississippi, his alma mater.

The scene was awfully familiar to the one that played out a year ago when Childress visited Mississippi in the sweltering summer and wooed Favre to come out of retirement and play for the Vikings. And it was not terribly unlike the scene that played out two years ago -- sans the Green Bay drama, of course -- when Favre was contemplating his controversial first "unretirement" that eventually sent the Packers icon to the New York Jets in a trade.

Favre spoke of his much-anticipated decision while attending the ESPY's last week in Los Angeles.

"I still have a little bit of time and still believe it or not [I'm] not completely healthy," he said. "I guess at 40 I may never be. I'm not getting any younger, but I am working hard trying to feel as best I can. Last year, I felt great. My arm was totally different than it was the year before and that made my decision a little bit easier. But we'll see."

Favre had one of the finest seasons of his 19-year career in 2009, completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 4,202 yards, 33 touchdowns, just seven interceptions and a career-best 107.2 quarterback rating in guiding Minnesota to the NFC Championship Game. The Vikings lost in overtime to the eventual league-champion New Orleans Saints.

The Vikings open training camp July 30 in Mankato, Minn.
