    Bill Cowher's wife passes away

We're stunned this evening to learn, via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that Kaye Cowher, the wife of former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, has died at the age of 54.

Per Bouchette, Kaye Cowher had been battling skin cancer. The duration of the condition isn't known; there had been no prior reports of any health issues, and no rumors that Mrs. Cowher had been ill.

Bill Cowher resigned as coach of the Steelers after the 2006 season, a year after the family purchased a home in North Carolina, Kaye Cowher's home state.

Pursued by the Browns and the Jets after the 2008 season and by the Bills last year, Cowher remains at the top of the "A" list for coaching vacancies.

The Cowhers have three daughters -- Megan, Lauren, and Lindsay. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cowher family.

I think the opposite, I feel like he will definately coach again now. He "retired" to North Carolina with his wife, and, well, she's dead. What else is he going to to? He's a young man, not even 60.

I'm thinking now that the only reason he retired is because his wife was fighting skin cancer and spending time with her and his family took priority over football, as it should. I suspect he will be coaching again next season after spending a year in mourning and getting his family life squared away for him to return to the field.

Isn't skin cancer 99% treatable? I know my mom had it and it was no big deal.

                  Wow, just wow.

They didn't say that's what the death was caused by did they? I mean they stated she had skin cancer but it wasn't the cause of death. I could be wrong though.

True. I just saw skin cancer and made the leap.

skin cancer itself is not that hard to treat, however when it metastises it usually heads for the bone marrow and lyphmatic system. the issue for a lot of patients is getting all the cancer before it can move into the body.

Real shame, but also explains why he has stayed away from the game recently.
