Buccaneers agree to terms with first-round pick McCoy
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first-round draft pick Gerald McCoy.
Penn signs extension
McCoy's deal is worth a maximum of $63 million, with $35 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.
General manager Mark Dominik announced the developments Saturday as the club opened training camp. There's a chance the defensive tackle could be on the field for a late afternoon practice.
"We're finishing up some language and paperwork. We've got a few things left," Dominik said. "I don't know if he's going to be able to make it out to practice this morning. We're excited about having him for the afternoon practice. That should work out. So in that way, it's a really good day, it's a great day for the Bucs."
The 6-foot-4, 295-pound McCoy was the third overall pick in this year's draft out of Oklahoma. He is being counted on to fill a huge hole on the defensive line.
McCoy participated in the team's organized team activities and minicamp earlier this year and said that time helped him start adjusting to the NFL, where "you've got to know so many different things and you've got to know all those different things and then be ready for the speed of the game while there's a 330-pound man across from you."
McCoy kept in shape in Oklahoma City, with occasional visits to Oklahoma's campus in Norman.
"College game preparation is a little different than the NFL. The season's longer," he said. "You can't do so much wear and tear, so you've kind of got to be careful."

Penn's contract is worth $43 million, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
"We're excited today, obviously," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik told the team's official site. "We just finalized Donald Penn's extension, it's a six-year extension. We're very excited about that."
Penn is a fifth-year pro who's appeared in 48 career games, including 44 straight as the Bucs' starting left tackle. He declined a $3.168 million tender offer and stayed away from the team's voluntary offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp while seeking a long-term contract.
Penn's signing comes on the same day the team agreed to terms with third overall pick Gerald McCoy on a five-year deal.
