Well, we now have an explanation for Glen Coffee's mysterious absence from training camp.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Coffee has retired.

Per Maiocco, Coffee exits the game after drawing the ire of position coach Tom Rathman by getting blown up by Mike Balogun on a blitz.

A third-round pick in 2009 out of Alabama, Coffee had 83 carries for 226 yards in 14 appearances as a rookie, with two starts.

The 49ers are left with Frank Gore, Michael Robinson, and Anthony Dixon at running back. We've got a feeling that they'll be making a move to replace Coffee, soon.

The team will be able to recover the balance of his $828,000 signing bonus on a four-year deal.

    It works out to $621,000.

kinda weird that he would call it quits after one rough year. i thought he could have been good. i think Dixon will become a very good backup for Gore though, so its not a huge hit for the Niners.

Favorite Glen Coffee memory: Verne Lundquist saying "Coffee spilled for a loss"

Coffee kind of sucked. He was ok, but didn't really have any standout qualities. He can be replaced by any number of available RBs, and the Niners essentially wasted a 3rd round pick on him.

Really bizarre that he would retire. I remember drafting him (fantasy), being forced to start him early last year, and he got like 25 carries and did not come close to 100 yards. 49ers should be fine moving without him, just weird how it went down.

Yeah, Coffee is the dumbest person in the world. I'm sure he has no job skills, and he'll make more playing football than doing anything else. And now he has to pay back his signing bonus??

How would you rate Colt Brennan's breakaway speed and power?

But I would rate his passing ability and his QB skill as well above average. He's probably among the top 10 in the NFL right now. Not up there with Brees and Brady, but not nearly as bad as Peyton Manning. So he's in between :seesaw:
                    That sounds legit

I didn't like Coffee when we drafted him. I've always wanted Coffee to get a change of pace back and he didn't fit it. No lost really seeing as he didn't do much last year.

lol. Wow. I thought this was going to be a joke thread. That's sorta disappointing. Too bad nobody cares.

Having covered 49ers RB Glen Coffee for 3 years, not surprised he retired. He has a higher call. Wouldn't shock me if he headed to ministry
If this is true, then he'll make plenty of money in his next occupation. Every Sunday, and at special events, people will just hand him money in droves via a cup or plate.

wait, wut?.....did I just imply something........

Imply something? Like what? Like religion's just a giant money scam and most anyone who claims to have a 'higher calling' is full of shit?

                              No, I didn't see that.
