The 2005 USC team didn't seek out the attention? I must have imagined all those interviews Matt Leinart gave about how he loved the game so much he came back for one more year (even though the real reason was his pending shoulder surgery put his draft stock in serious question), the other interviews he gave about his ballroom dancing class, Pete Carroll throwing the Lendale White dummy off that building so all the media could see, or Snoop Dogg being invited to team practices. Listen to Petros Papadakis talk about what was going on there during the Bush/Leinart era sometime. Leinart and Bush soaked up every second of the LA lifestyle while they were here.

Sorry, I thought you would have understood the difference between "seeking attention" and "not deflecting". Was the team in the media spotlight? Absolutely. Were they pesting ESPN to do another story on them week after week, asking for more interviews, and everything else? Not that I've ever heard. You can bask in the spotlight without chasing it.

Besides which, it kind of seems like you are holding a bit of a double-standard. How much has Tebow attempted to stay out of the spotlight throughout his career thus far? When the media wanted to interview him, they got to interview him. When they wanted to run a story, they could come get footage and a quote. No different from USC. And yet you credit him with "not seeking out" the attention and the hype....

So you just grazed over the Lendale White hoax, and inviting celebrities to be on the sideline and even participate in practices? I don't know if you're aware that Pete Carroll's #1 recruiting tool while at USC was the media and trying to make his program seem like the coolest kids in school.

I "grazed over" some of that because a lot of it is the USC publicity department doing its job. Why would Pete Carroll not take advantage of the media spotlight on his team? But its not simply being in the spotlight that I was referring to - every major program has its degree of the spotlight simply for being successful. I meant the endless hype that ESPN had on regularly - calling USC the "greatest college football team ever", "virtually unbeatable", etc etc. Because it was that hype which turned neutral fans against USC. Just like Tebow got such praise from some of them media and a lot of fans. He might not have sought that kind of praise and acclaim, but neither did the USC players. I seriously doubt Pete Carroll was calling up ESPN and demanding they run three nightly features on his program instead of just two...

Bush and Leinart and the rest may have enjoyed the spotlight. No denying that. But so hasTebow. So again, since you refused to address that question, I will ask again - how is what Bush and Leinart in accepting the attention different from what Tebow did?

I guess it's not really all that different but while they were using their fame to get into night clubs in LA and bang girls, Tebow was at the very worst using it to promote his religion. Yet I don't remember anything but love being showered on Bush and Leinart coming into the NFL.

I recall a fair bit of animosity, at least from fans. Hell, I even questioned Leinart's commitment a bit. I recall reading several pre-draft articles that focused on Reggie Bush's ankles...

My only point was that any time someone gets a fair degree of hype - from the media, fans, or both - there is almost certain to be some backlash. Whether the hype is deserved, whether its sought, none of that is likely to come into play. There are simply going to be people who get annoyed at it and that affects their perception of the person or thing getting hyped.

So if the above is all true, how does Russell become a #1 Draft pick and touted like Kiper did?

How does a fan recognize the system, his losing/scraping by and that he was only decent when they were running well.

How does a scout/etc not see that?

What do they look at that you and I aren't seeing? Is it just his raw physical talent/build that all that care for?

Oakland had a massive need at QB. Hindsight being what it is, they probably should have taken the best player available that year which would have been Calvin Johnson in the case of the Raiders. Adrian Peterson and Joe Thomas would have also been great picks in terms of talent meeting a need.

The fact is, Al Davis is one of those GM's that's enamored by a players physical ability and upside. Jamarcus Russell was for all intents and purposes a pretty raw prospect with one good year under his belt. But the kid had(has) an incredible arm and the build you'd like from a QB.

What happened, no GM/scout/draft expert can really peg 100% of the time.. he got his money, he didn't really want to work at his craft, he was lazy and ballooned into the size that rivaled an offensive tackle.

But this happens every year in the draft, and it will happen more and more each season. Quarterbacks will ALWAYS go higher than anyone else, because the fact is.. there just aren't many elite quarterbacks in the game. Hell, there are only a handful of really good ones. So for every Flacco, Ryan, and so forth.. you'll see a Russell, Quinn, Alex Smith and so on. It's why you saw Sam Bradford go first overall this year when Suh and McCoy were possibly the safer pick.

One thing I feel I must say.. McCoy DID bomb, but Kiper is correct. McCoy DOES have time. He wasn't projected to battle for any type of starting or 2nd string job. Holmgren is going to groom him, which will take time. Basically right after he was drafted, Mike Holmgren released a statement saying Colt will sit, watch, & learn his rookie season. Delhomme will mentor him, so time is really of the essence for Colt.
