Very good trade for the Ravens.
Ravens acquire CB Josh Wilson in trade with Seattle
The Ravens acquired the cornerback that they've been seeking, trading a conditional draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Josh Wilson, the team announced.
Wilson, 25, who played at the University of Maryland, has been a starting cornerback for the Seahawks this preseason. A second-round pick in 2007, he has six interceptions in three seasons.
“He adds depth to our secondary and will help us," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "Pending his physical, we expect Josh to be taking snaps against the Jets on opening night.”
The Ravens gave up a conditional draft pick for Wilson. That means the more Wilson plays, the higher the pick becomes.
This move improves what has been considered a weak area for the Ravens, who lost top cornerback Domonique Foxworth to a season-ending knee injury at the start of training camp. Assuming Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb will start most of the season for the Ravens, Wilson would be a significant upgrade for the Ravens at nickel back.
Wilson is expected to arrive in Baltimore on Wednesday, but he isn't expected to play in the preseason finale at St. Louis.
He has playmaking ability, returning two interceptions for touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown as a rookie and averaged 25.4 yards on kickoffs in 2008. Wilson only ran back 11 kickoffs last season.
Although not very big (5 feet 9, 192 pounds), Wilson is known for being a speed corner. At the 2007 NFL combine, he had the fourth-fastest time of all defensive backs (4.39).
“He’s an extremely fiery and aggressive player, and I think he’s very talented,” said Foxworth, who played with Wilson for three years at Maryland. “I know his personality fits into what we’re building here. Josh is a no-nonsense type of guy that fits in with this defense and what it means to be a Raven. Off the field, he is a high-integrity guy. He’s a family man, who is very smart and community-minded.”
