Lewis Says His Piece on Jets
Ray Lewis said he’s heard all the talk coming out of the New York Jets’ locker room. He’s noticed the hype surrounding his upcoming opponent.
The 11-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player is ready to settle the warring words on the field.
Lewis was in mid-season form when addressing the media on Thursday, letting his true feelings about Head Coach Rex Ryan and the Jets’ players be known.
“The bottom line is, we’re talking about the Jets like we’re talking about the Saints. That’s the defending Super Bowl champs. Until they play tonight, that’s the only people that can be dethroned. Drew Brees, not Mark Sanchez and the Jets. All this, ‘We’re the Miami Heat of football.’ If ya’ll are the Miami Heat, we’ve got to be the Lakers, because we’re looking for multiple rings.
“You hear all this yap, yap, yap, but the bottom line is you have to buckle up your chin straps.”
Ryan said on “Hard Knocks” that Lewis “tapped out” after a few plays when he was allowed to make defensive calls during a preseason game.
“We’re not talking about whether I didn’t want to call one defense or not,” Lewis said. ”Coach Mark Sanchez. Coach your Jets. My name should not come out Rex’s mouth unless you’re telling somebody to come block me, which is going to be a very hard damn task come Monday night.”
If anything, Lewis just wants to play this debate out between the white lines at New Meadowlands Stadium.
“The game ain’t played through tongues. The game is played when you buckle up your chin straps,” said Lewis. ”All this pressure he wants to put on his team, I hope they can cash the check that he’s writing.
“It’s what you love, but at a certain point you get tired of everybody talking about stuff. You can talk about whatever, but the bottom line is there ain’t no man over there that’s just going to flat-out whup me, so I’m good.
“Monday night, the greatest gift we got is opportunity, because when the ref blows that whistle”, I don’t give a damn what Rex say, or what nobody else say, it’s all about however you
want to get it, let’s get it.
