Look, I agree the BCS is fucked up. But IMO going to any sort of a playoff system that includes the BCS, polling, whatever doesn't really fix the problem it just messes it up in a new way. College football either just needs to go back to pre-BCS set ups and live with the imperfections etc or go to a system that would completely change the face of college football. Since the last one is WAY less likely I'd rather just see the pre-BCS stuff and enjoy it even with all it's flaws.Comment

I don't think teams will abandon their out of conference games. There is going to have to be some concessions made by everyone in order to get a playoff system in place. I think the BCS is going to have to be involved somehow and allowing them to determining the seeding may have to happen.Comment

If the only way to get into the "dance" is by winning your conference then OOC games are completely pointless. Other than the money you'd get by playing them but I'd be willing to bet most schools would forgo an early season payday in order to try and not have any players get hurt/worn for games that may "pop" for a TV viewer really don't matter at all in terms of determining a champion at the end of the year. You might see teams play a game or two against some scrub FCS team as a tune up and then hop right into meaningful conference play.Comment

When was the last time a regular season college basketball game really mattered? Honestly. You are saying you want a system where the regular season has almost no impact what so ever on the championship like in college basketball? Remember, in some conferences in college basketball, you can have zero wins all regular season, but by winning 4 games in the conference championship, still go to the Tournament and have a shot at the title. Ya, that is GREAT for college basketball.Comment

They'd have to/be smart to.

It would encourage better OOC matchups.
Everyone wins.Comment

No. Get rid of rankings all together. OOC games would no longer matter if I had my way/set up so they'd be useless and pointless. The system would no longer be objective(if you still had rankings/at larges). I will never support a college football playoff system with at larges, that uses rankings or formulas to determine the teams, etc. It'd just be a half assed attempt at polishing a turd.Comment

Both of these ideas suck. Top 4 conference champions in an altered BCS formula to allow computers to use margin of victory and AP instead of the Coaches Poll (if they agree). That way the conference games matter because you have to win the conference, the OOC matters because you have to be in the top 4, and there are still other bowls open for teams to gain publicity and money.Comment

And the OOC games wouldn't matter. Why would a team want to play Texas when instead, they could play San Jose St and not risk losing or injury since most starters would be out at the half? And hey, even if they do lose, no biggie, in fact, they could lose all 4 OOC games and still make the tournament with a good enough conference record. That would make a third of the season completely pointless.
So now you don't even need to win the conference, you can still get in! Great, now you not only devalued some of the season, but devalued it completely. The conference games are important, but if you lose, no biggie, you can still get in. The OOC games are kind of important, but if you lose, no biggie, you can still win your conference and go.

This sillyness where one or two losses end your season would be eliminated, meaning more teams are still alive deeper into the season -- thus more games with more importance.
8 out of 119 would still be the lowest percentage of teams making the playoffs of any sport. This idea that the regular season would be destroyed is Chicken Little "sky is falling" bullshit.Comment

I'm pretty okay with it too. 4-team playoff would be sweet, but I'm not turned off by the current system at all.Comment

Georgia, VT, ND, thier seasons are OVER right now. The rest of the schedule is completely meaningless.
With a playoff, they would have their backs against the wall right now, but would still be playing towards something.Comment

That's fine, but then don't come at me with this "every game counts" rhetoric. So far from the truth.
It's the sport where the least games count.
And I could counter with zero losses should never eliminate your season.Comment
