Possible Boise State/Nebraska series stalled because...

    Nebraska said no? Nope.
Nebraska wanted a home only series? Nope.
Nebraska badmouthed potatoes (the food, not the poster)? Nope.
Nebraska wouldn't pay $1,000,000 to Boise just for them to play in Lincoln? YEP!

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

    Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Interesting to hear. I remember hearing the opposite for years, but it seems like in some cases, Boise is demanding large sums of money which teams like Nebraska will just scoff at and move on.

Sounds like Boise can keep playing the victim if they do this. I'm getting pretty damn tired of hearing how teams are scared to play Boise, hopefully this gets out and we dont have to hear that anymore.

Makes me wonder if other schools have agreed to pay to play Boise.

Do a 10 second google search, and you will find plenty of teams that either backed out of potential games with Boise, or outright refused to sit at the table with them.

Every college football fan in the country should be rooting for Boise & TCU to go unbeaten, and play in the BCS Championship Game. Watch how fast the BCS cartel screams "playoff!" and demands change when the cartel is left out of the Championship Game. They will need to find new & creative ways to use, abuse, and ensure that all non cartel teams stay irrelevent.

And another thing, cupcake teams routinely get paid huge lump sums to go on the road vs. BCS cartel teams. Why else do you think they are willing to take these early season beatings? Not sure why Boise should be expected to come to Lincoln for free. That's not how this stuff works.

I should also add, that nobody should be surprised that they asked for $1M, since it's pretty well known that this is the standard deal Boise has offered to any team in the country.

Since they have had had virtually ZERO takers on home-and-home deals or visits to Boise, two years ago they put out an open invite, to ANY TEAM IN THE COUNTRY, for a one road game deal - for $1M.

Obviously, Nebraska balked. But I wonder how much Nebraska is paying South Dakota St, Western Kentucky, & Idaho, the three powerhouses they did decide to pay to play....keep it real, Tom Osborne.

Boise also has an open challenge to ANY TEAM IN THE COUNTRY to play home-and-home. Oregon & Oregon St. stepped up. They also have single road games with Ole Miss, Arkansas, Arizona St, & Washington coming up (all have agreed to pay the $1M, and all will be on national TV & profit from the game).

Boise knows schools with giant home stadiums won't agree to home-and-home, so they are more than willing to play "neutral" site one and done games, like the one they just played vs. VT - a game where VT traveled less than a tenth of the distance, had 80% of the fans, and took home 2/3 of the money.

So let's not frame this as Boise holding up Nebraska. Nebraska would rather pay South Dakota St.

Boise is a bullshit team. I'm sick and tired of people trying to argue they deserve to be in the BCS championship. Until they play in a legit division and go undefeated like so many teams have I refuse to buy into Boise being worthy of a Championship shot.

That's actually a seperate argument, having almost nothing to do with this thread.

They managed to schedule a top 10 team (VT) and a top 25 team (Oregon St) this year. They are also moving to the MWC, a step up from the WAC. They have offered hom-and-home games to ANYONE, and nuetral site games in the opponents backyard to ANYONE.

It's not as if they don't try. But they won't take these single road games without the same payoff the bad teams get. And why the fuck should they?

I think you are missing the point. Nebraska offered a home and home with Boise. But Boise would only play in Nebraska (regardless of the home and home stipulation) if they were paid at least $1,000,000. Why should Nebraska have to pay Boise if it is a home and home deal?

Exactly. You can't strive to be a big boy team by doing home and homes but then still want to get paid like you're San Jose State.

                            Incorrect.

Nebraska turned down the the home game because they didn't want to pay for it. This was for 2010 (this year), Boise went ahead and scheduled an home and home with Oregon St instead. Nobody has said why the Nebraska home and home fell apart. They would have moved the VT game to October and played Nebraska opening week, but by that point it was too late for VT to move the game, but Nebraska decided to pay less money to beat Cupcak U anyway.

Boise has nothing to prove here, they have scheduled multiple games with cartel teams the next few years, so the notion they didn't want to play Nebraska is ridiculous. Nebraska wasn't willing to pay, chose a cheaper game and easier win, that's really the end of it.

But the point is, why is Boise still expecting a pay day? Nebraska is going to pay to get potentially beat with little to no benefit for themselves?
