Among the business being done at the NFL's one-day ownership meeting in Chicago is a coming change in the company that will make the uniforms worn by NFL players.
The league has announced that, as of April 2012, Nike will be the manufacturer of NFL uniforms. Which means that Reebok is out.
More specifically, Nike will be the "official uniform provider and will produce all on-field apparel including game uniforms and base layer, as well as sideline personnel apparel and fan gear."
Though the rest of us have to pay for the clothing we wear, the way it works for the NFL is that Reebok now, and Nike later, will pay many millions for the privilege of having their logo appear on every NFL jersey, pants, gloves, wristbands, etc. And Reebok now, and Nike later, will make millions from the sale of replica and authentic jerseys bearing those logos.
How powerful is the placement of the logo on the NFL jersey? Several years ago, a Nike commercial featuring Shawne Merriman in uniform clearly displayed the Reebok logo.
Maybe in 2012 Reebok can do a commercial with Merriman wearing a Nike logo.
And they plan to make some drastic changes.

Nike plans to "dramatically" change NFL jerseys
On the day that the NFL announced Nike will replace Reebok as the league's uniform supplier in 2012, a Nike official said changes are coming to NFL jerseys.
Nike Brand President Charlie Denson told Darren Rovell of CNBC that the change would be similar to changes that Nike has made to college football jerseys.
"We plan on changing the NFL jersey dramatically just like we've done with the college programs, using new thinking and the greatest technology available," Denson said. "The NFL program hasn't had the same type of advancement in recent years.
After years of Reebok leading the way on NFL jerseys, it will be interesting to see what dramatic changes Nike comes up with. I just hope no NFL team follows the hideous example of Oregon in college football.
Hope they don't try to do any gay pro-combat stuff. As long as they leave the creative control to the teams, the changes will likely be fabric/manufacturing related and not aesthetic.

I would doubt the NFL and owners would agree to a deal in which Nike does the design of the jerseys. They'll just throw their "technology" on it.
I'll be excited to see what Nike does with the uniform. If there is a lockout or short season next year, it would be nice if they came back with a whole new look.

Well, Nike did design the Broncos uniforms. (Which is why it's hilarious that Reebok has been making them for the last 8 years.)
But I agree, there's no way the NFL does what the NHL did with the gay RBK edge template and let them recreate the basic design. Just lighter fabric most likely.
Itll probably be like the NHL lockout where they comeback with all new jerseys like the RBK Edge except pro combat. I cant see Nike doing anything to crazy like they do in CFB but you never know

True, especially with Nike, but knowing the NFL, I expect them to keep Nike relatively hands off.
