Packers trade for S Anthony Smith

    per jsonline:

Green Bay - The Packers have traded for Jacksonville Jaguars safety Anthony Smith -- the same player Green Bay cut before the 2009 season opener -- a source told the Journal Sentinel.

It is not know at this time what the Packers sent to the Jaguars in exchange for Smith.

It's a little puzzling the Packers acquired a safety, since former starter Atari Bigby (ankle) is eligible to come off the physically unable perform list on Monday.

But a source said the Packers fell cornerback Al Harris (knee) will be able to return this week, but Bigby may take longer to begin practicing.

Running back James Starks (hamstring) is also eligible to come off PUP.

When Smith, the former Pittsburgh Steeler, was cut in 2009, it was not a move greeted warmly by several players, including Charles Woodson.

According to sources, defensive coordinator Dom Capers and safeties coach Darren Perry wanted to keep Smith because he knew the defensive system. But general manager Ted Thompson kept former draft pick Aaron Rouse instead. Rouse was waived by the Packers during the '09 season.

Smith was picked up the St. Louis Rams, who later waived him. The Packers put in a claim for Smith at that time, but he was awarded to the Jaguars because their record was worse than the Packers.

Smith has started three games this season for the Jaguars this season and has 15 tackles and one interception.

The Jaguars play on Monday night, so Smith will be getting a bye week of sorts.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.
What the hell is going on in Green Bay??

Packers cut him last year and we picked him up. Now the Packers get him back and we get something in return. Genius.

Apparently TT sees his talent now??

I hope he gave up a 4th for him. A reserve safety is worth a 4th and Lynch is not. TT is genius!!!

Conditional 7th. We need the depth, and some kind of starting quality back at S.

I wonder how good of "football shape" Starks is in. He hasn't played a down of football in over 1 and half(roughly) seasons.
Harris rehabbed pretty hard. Always stays in good shape. It'll be nice to have him and Tramon on each side, and Woodson playing rover.

Probably a 6th or 7th-rounder. What I don't understand is why they didn't sign Willie Parker. He might not be a star, but he's better than Brandon Jackson
