The Giants/Browns game featured some great OL play, particularly on runs, and particularly by the Browns. It always seems like when I watch games from the 60's the blocking schemes on running plays are far more sophisticated than today. In todays game, it seems like teams are more willing to rely on the athleticism of the players. Check out some of the convoys these Cleveland backs have on some of the sweeps. I shudder to think what Steven Jackson or Adrian Peterson could do with that kind of blocking.

Maybe the reason teams don't use pulls & traps as often these days, is because coaches fear the faster DL of today can scrape down the line and blow up the play. It just seems like today's running game consists of mostly opening up a hole, and hoping the back can get to the second or third level on burst alone.

I think that may be part of it, but I also think that the DL in the past (especially the DT's) were just as fast and probably faster than the DL in today's game. The main difference, IMO, is that the O-linemen of the past were lighter and more athletic. The O-linemen in today's game are just gigantic slabs of beef who specialize in pass-blocking and pushing/grappling with their long arms. In the past, pushing/grappling was illegal and the running game was more important due to all of the passing-friendly rules not being in the rulebook yet. It was definitely a different game.
