Hawaii "close" to joining MWC for football

They have a handshake agreement, according to the school president. This could pretty much end the WAC as we know it.

The University of Hawaii says it's in talks to join the Mountain West Conference for football.

Hawaii discussing joining Mountain West Conference in football

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawaii is close to joining the Mountain West Conference for football, raising the prospect of leaving the depleted WAC after 32 years.

Hawaii president M.R.C. Greenwood talked to Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson over the phone Thursday and said she was confident a deal would be worked out.

"We have a handshake but we have yet to agree on the details," Greenwood said, before adding: "The people of the state of Hawaii should be very positive about this and convinced that we have a bright future."

It's not clear where the rest of Hawaii's athletic programs fit in. Athletic director Jim Donovan said his poll of the school's 18 other teams indicated 16 of them would prefer to play in the Big West.

The Mountain West released a statement Thursday night saying the conference's board of directors "has authorized Commissioner Craig Thompson to begin discussions with the University of Hawaii regarding possible membership in the sport of football only."

No offer has been extended to Hawaii, a source told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

Hawaii is the longest-running member of the Western Athletic Conference. But the WAC recently has lost Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State to the Mountain West.

My thoughts on this echo Gambino's...

    Hawaii is:

    1) Very close
    2) Contributes nothing
    3) Annoying as fuck

Really hope TCU doesn't jump to the Big East.

So Hawaii would join just for football? Then Big West for everything else? Not sure why they wouldn't just join full time.

I think this means TCU has one foot out the door.

The WAC isn't dying, it's basically just merging with the bottom feeders of the Mountain West

Because the Big West > MWC for all our other sports.

Yea I'll take the MWC over the new WAC with Texas State and UTSA any day but I still think independent is the best way to go for football with all other sports joining the Big West.

lol, as if Hawaii could survive as an independent for Football.

Notre Dame has a 100+ years of history and the service academies have the entire armed forces and all those related to it as their potential TV audience, so CBS will fork out the cash. Meanwhile, BYU have the entire Mormon Religion, so having their own TV Network is viable .

No one is going to give Hawaii a decent TV deal, nor is having their own TV network an option.

I think Alaska and Hawaii should form their own conference. The "Way Out of the Fucking Way" or "WOOFW" conference.
