Gus Malzahn decides winning is overrated

Earlier this afternoon, it was reported that Stanford's Greg Roman was no longer in the running for the head coaching vacancy at Vanderbilt.

vandy is probably the worst job in D1 football, 3 Mil a year cures that i guess. Crazy academic restrictions in the toughest conference in America, no thanks.

They have to let the dumb kids play if they ever want to be competitive.

Vandy will never be able to win the SEC, but a good season there is 7 wins. So the bar is low, and a few bowl appearances and he can bolt for greener pastures.

If by "crazy academic standards", you mean the standards used everywhere but the SEC, then yes, they are crazy. A gerbil could pass an Auburn class if it could hold a pencil.

UPDATE: ESPN's Joe Schad reports that Vanderbilt does indeed want Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn as its next head coach, but the Washington Post's report (see below) that Malzahn has already accepted the job conflicts with the report by AuburnSports.com that sources close to Malzahn are saying that he will not take the gig. We'll have to wait and see on this one for now.

                ---

In what may go down in history as a momentous day for Vanderbilt football, Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post is reporting that Gus Malzahn has accepted the Commodores' head-coaching gig. Prisbell's news likely came directly or indirectly from James Franklin, who was thought to be Vandy's second choice.

When reached by VandySports.com, vice chancellor of athletics David Williams said that he could not comment on the report, and when asked when he might be able to comment, he said he could not comment on that either. VandySports also says that posts on several social media by Vandy and Auburn players appear to confirm the news.

However, a source close to Malzahn tells Tom Dienhart of Yahoo! Sports that it's not a done deal, and that Malzahn is in discussions.

Good. Now James Franklin can take the Vandy job and Maryland can get rid of him.

LOLWUT? Show me a school in a BCS conference other than Stanford that is on par with Vanderbilt in academic requirements for their athletes.

Oh, looks like you can't. Keep pretending that the SEC is the only conference that lets athletes in who would otherwise have no shot of getting in.

Anyway, Malzahn turning down $3 M tells you just how hopeless that job is. Awful facilities, no athletic dept., brutal requirements, limited recruiting base, history of losing, etc.

Can't wait until he's exposed next season when he loses Cam and 28 seniors though. That should be funny.
