My favorite? This sudden death: The ball starts on a team's own 20 yard line. Whoever wins the toss gets to select whether they want to play offense and try to drive it down from the 20 or play defense. I think depending on weather/team strengths some teams would select to play defense.

The start on 20 yard line is because most NFL kickoffs are ran back to at least the 30 and 35 yard line. If you start at the 20 that's like an extra first down farther away from field goal range.

I would prefer them to have overtime like college football's except start the ball at midfield.

I think the best solution is to have sudden death, but to also invoke CFL scoring rules. You lose the coin toss, the other team elects to receive, your kicker kicks the ball out of the back of the endzone for a touchback, you score a "rogue", you win!

Here's a wacky idea. How about just playing another quarter? Why play real football for 60 minutes, then resort to a gimmick to decide the game? College OT would be like a tie game in baseball, but instean of extra innings, the decide it with a HR derby. HR derby's are "exciting" (actually no they aren't, HR derby's suck, but you get the point). Basketball? Tie game? Let's have a 3-point contest.

You guys are goofballs, college OT is a lame gimmick.

That has been my thought all along. If people are so hung up on the "sudden death" aspect of it, just eliminate "sudden death" and play an extra quarter. Whoever is ahead at the end, wins. If its still tied, you play another quarter. Simple.

              Exactly.

I've said before that I don't really see the need for OT in the regular season anyway, but I tend to get chewed out for that view lol.

If you have to have it then an extra quarter (either full length or shortened) makes the most sense.

                It's 'rouge' asshole.

As for the NFL, sudden death is fucking moronic. Just play a quarter and shut the fuck up.

or hockey with the penalty shot?

and this is your best option?
-First team to 6 points wins (or 4 points, which would mean two scores of any kind, or one TD, wins)

even in baseball and basketball both teams get a chance to play offense. your talking about gimmicks to finish a game but you seem to forget that sudden death, or the new 1st team to score a TD is based on winning a coin toss. yeah, thats a great way to end a playoff game

each team should get a chance to play offense and defense at least 1 time.

First team to 6 eliminates the cheap 40-yard-drive-40-yard-FG scenerio.

First team to score a TD is hardly based on simply winning a coin toss. You still have to drive the field and get into the end zone.

I can live with having both teams get a possession, that's fine too. What I can't live with is cheesy gimmick 25 yrd football deciding games. Its bush league.

And don't forget, that in hockey (and soccer) they play a full OT of real competition before they resort to a shootout. The shootouts in both of those sports are more about "ok, let's just get on with this already so we can go home". And take note that both sports play extra OT before even going to the goofy shootouts (if at all) in the most important games.

How about instead of overtime, both teams get the loss and don't advance to the next round.

                        :o
