Ron Rivera Named New Panthers Head Coach

We may have a favorite for the Carolina Panthers head coaching position.

SI’s Peter King reports that Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is headed for a second interview with the Panthers on Sunday. A second interview often precedes a job offer, although that’s not always the case. Perhaps the Panthers pick a few “finalists” for the position.

Carolina has interviewed four defensive coordinators for the job: Cleveland’s Rob Ryan, San Francisco’s Greg Manusky, Perry Fewell of the Giants, and Rivera.

I think he'll be a good coach. I wanted him as Tennessee's head man if Fisher got fired.

If they had come to an agreement, they should've made Fisher wear that Manning jersey of his on the way out.

If the Panthers resign James Anderson and Thomas Davis they already have most the personnel to make the 3-4 switch. The CB's are what Rivera likes physical man coverage guys. A nose tackle is the only thing really absent to make the change at this point. Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson (If re-signed) would be big in the change, CJ can play down on the line and as a rush LB, he was really one of the few bright spots on the defense. Hardy showed tons of flashes this season, I thought he should start over Brayton or Everette Brown.

Ron Rivera would def be my first choice as coach, get the Panthers back to focusing on defense and a strong run game which worked since they came into the league outside a few bad seasons. I like Rob Ryan too, anybody but a offensive minded guy, I'd hate to see a reach for QB with the #1 pick. GM needs to be replaced tho... the 1st pick in the second round is going to New England... we used that pick on Armanti Edwards :confused2:

According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera will become the Panthers' next head coach, "barring a huge change of direction."

SI's Peter King passed along a similar report this weekend. It's not like the Panthers are waiting on Rivera's playoff run to end, so they'll probably end up making the union official this week. Rivera guided San Diego to a No. 1 overall ranking in total defense this season. The 49-year-old former NFL linebacker has been deserving of a head coaching job for years

So I wonder if that makes Da'Quan Bowers the #1 pick?

Can Bowers move to OLB? Cause Rivera will more than likely bring in a 3-4.

Oh god... nick fairely then. As hard as it is to accept, the panthers are going to be just as bad next year until that team can learn how to run the 3-4 but i do expect them to be active in FA to sign people who know how to play in the 3-4.

Rivera isn't locked into a 3-4 though... he's coached in virtually every defense you can imagine,

We've actually got a fairly decent team. A good amount of talent, but injury issues along the offensive line, and most other places as well.

Very interested to see who Rivera brings in to run the offense.

Finally our defense improves and we lose our DC.. Gonna be another disappointing yr in San Diego i'll bet

IMO... even before Luck decided to stay at school Bowers was the Panthers pick. Julius Peppers 2.0. Unfortunately no d-lineman are the right size or fit for the 3-4 that can be selected in the top 5. Bowers is about 275 and Fairley is just under 300. Not sure Fairley would do too great being a NT, and 3-4 DE would almost be a waste of the number 1 pick. If the Panthers re-sign their LB's then they will def have the personnel on the second level for the 3-4.

I thought it would be him or Rob Ryan. Good decision by Carolina management. I agree with Woy this should be the DE the number one pick now.
