Maybe stupid but something ive always wondered about. How good would a kicker/punter have to be? How good would someone have to be to be the number 1 pick overall?

70yrd FG range? A punter who can punt to any point on the field?

so top 10 you better be blowing someone.

And how do they justify his contract. Cant compare it to the WR or RB that was drafted 9th

The guy would have to be a dual kicker/punter where he does both jobs phenominally (ie. does not miss from under 40, makes 99/100 40-50 yarders and is dependable from 50+, and averages 50+ yards per punt), and be able to play another position on the field at least adequately.
Finally back after a 3 year hiatus!

If he could punt like Lechler and kick like Vinatieri, he would be drafted. By having a single person be punter and kicker, you allow for more freedom on the gameday roster by having an open spot. I wouldn't be surprised if someone THAT good was drafted in the top 10 in a thin draft class.

if you can make an 80+ field goal consistently, I say you should be the #1 pick.

Can kick a FG pretty much anywhere on the field

I think it would be interesting to analyze the production that the Raiders have gotten from Janikowski and compare it to the other players that were taken in that same draft. Janikowski is a damn good kicker and he's also really good at kickoffs...I would guess that the Raiders have gotten more out of Janikowski than most of the other teams did in that 2000 draft.

                  Brown was a bust
But other then that looks like 3 or players that I can see (Pennington, Alexander, Hovan and Bullock) after he was picked.

Janos numbers are really good, over a ten year career he has kicked at least one 50 yarder (49 yards was his long in 05) and a 57 and a 61 yarder in the last two years. a 78.8 % FG kicker. He has 1142 career points

Alxander had a total of 112 TDs and Pennigton threw 102 passing TDs.

Im my opinion raiders made out. Alexander has 3612 career points to Janos 1142 but you are getting more years now outta jano and he kicks the ball out of the endzone on Kickoffs. Alexander just died off after that monster 27 TD season. Still though in that draft I think Alexander was going 19th of the first round. Six seasons for 1200 or more rushing yards and 14 or more TDs

Lulz at Ron Danye....I wonder if this will Hurt John Clays status as well.

He would have to have a MONSTER LEG. Like Out of the endzone every kickoff and has hit multiple 60+ yard field Goals in games.

I would take Jano over any of those players I bolded honestly. Kickers should be drafted higher, they take just has much heat and have just as much if not more pressure than most other players, and having a good kicker is key to be successful especially in the playoffs.

he was good for only like 2-3 years IMO... same with Corey Simon... I'll actually bold him too lol As far as longevity and staying productive Jano outlasts almost everybody in the first round. Then again, there were a lot of guys in later rounds that should of been first so who knows where it would stand then.

But I think looking at guys in the later rounds would be a different argument. I think Janikowski has proven to be more productive than most of his counterparts in the 1st round.

Also, that 2000 draft has some of the worst WRs I've ever seen. R Jay Soward? Travis Taylor? Peter Warrick? Yuck.
