Report: Tressel May Have known of Transgression in April

Report: Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was alerted to gear sale in April - ESPN

Yahoo! Sports is reporting Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel was informed that some of his players had sold memorabilia to the owner of a tattoo parlor more than eight months before the school said it was made aware of improper transactions.

The website, citing an unidentified source, reports Tressel received information as early as April 2010 that players were selling items to Edward Rife, who owns Fine Line Ink Tattoos in Columbus

Ohio State officials did not immediately respond to a requests for comment by the AP.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith has said the local U.S. Attorney's office on Dec. 7 alerted the school that some of its players were selling items such as jerseys and championship rings to Rife.

Soon after, the school opened an investigation and informed the NCAA of the possible rules violations.

On Dec. 23, quarterback Terrelle Pryor was among five players suspended by the NCAA for the first five games of the 2011 season. All the players were allowed to play in Ohio State's 31-26 victory against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl.

If it is proven that Tressel knew about the possible NCAA violations and did not inform Smith or the compliance office, the coach and the program could face more sanctions.

Tailback Dan "Boom" Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey and left tackle Mike Adams, along with Sugar Bowl star Solomon Thomas, a backup defensive end who had the game-clinching interception were also suspended.

Each player was also made to repay to charity the value of what he gained by swapping their memorabilia for cash and tattoos.

Ohio State is appealing to the NCAA to get the suspensions reduced, although the NCAA's decision to allow the players to participate in the Sugar Bowl drew a wide range of criticism and questions.

Was just on my way to start this thread until I saw that you already did. But yeah, this is not good.

Is Tressel the most overrated "character guy" in college coaching? To me it's between the Sweater Vest and Mark Richt.

Last time Tressel was implicated in something, ESPN launched a full scale assault on him and OSU, the NCAA camped out on campus for 3 years and found zilch, and Tressel was exonerated.

There's a lot of smoke here though.. quite frankly there's a lot of different info from a lot of different sources out there. Don't know what to believe, but I'll wait for the University's response to try and analyze things.

Based on that, what good character guys are there in college coaching?

It's a profession full of slime balls, and Richt and Tressel aren't immune to that either, but they are two great coaches who really fully understand what it is to be a coach in terms of developing young men and doing what's best for them.

Very few, I know, but some coaches actually receive credit for being "good character guys" when in actuality they run some of the dirtier programs around. I'm more taking a shot at Richt here, who comes from the Bobby Bowden school of masking your renegade program and roster full of criminals behind christian values.

Ohio State collects three conference losses because of these distractions while JoePa goes out with a Big Ten championship next season.* Book it.

Tressel masks his criminals behind his sweater vest. He even ratted out Maurice Clarett...what a guy!

If I were a semi-criminal athlete I'd never go to Ohio State...or anywhere in the Big Ten for that matter. If I were an athlete that wanted to break some rules I'd go to VA Tech, Florida State or some school in the ACC. Those coaches know how to keep their fucking mouth shut and their criminals...I mean players out of the system and on the football field.

This isnt even interesting or news worthy. Players sold their own stuff for a few bucks and the NCAA thinks they have power to controll every aspect of a life...this is lame beyond belief
