I think it is also worth noting that ND is the favorite over Michigan.

I thought ND would take more of a public hit with the loss.

Honestly the betting line doesn't mean much. I forget how much HFA is worth but for ND to only be a 4 point favorite Vegas is basically calling the game a coin flip. I'd agree with that, maybe with a slight edge to Notre Dame.

Is Brian Kelly too angry to be Notre Dame’s head coach?

Greg Pollowitz of NRO’s Right Field said today that he believed Kelly should be fired:
I think the trustees of the university should fire him this morning. Not because of the loss, but because of the way he treated his players. This is really uncalled for.

            Do not care.

People act as though he just started acting like this when he got to Notre Dame. LOL at the "way Kelly treats his players". Go back to the first thing guys said about Kelly when they choose ND as recruits under him and it goes back to the way Kelly treats them. He doesn't treat every player like that. He knows who he can and can't talk to like that.

Let me know when he starts punching players. If these guys need a good yelling to get their heads in the game, then so be it.

Yeah we can't have coaches yelling at their players. Nick Saban should be fired too. And every coach who has ever won anything.

To me, its odd that Kelly is so quick to pull the plug on Crist. Its almost self-incriminating...admitting that his ability to judge talent is so bad that his season-opening QB lasts 1 half before its on to the next guy.

Reminds me of Charlie Weis and Demetrius Jones. Jones is the #1 QB to start the year, gets pulled after attempting 3 passes, and never plays at Notre Dame again. How can a coach be so confident in a QB that he names him the season-opening starter, then lack such conviction and pull the QB in the 1st game?

Well, Kelly has a history of using multiple QBs. In that regard, I don't think it's very surprising that he'd yank one guy for the other based on poor performance. Crist just hasn't been able to make the quick reads and accurate passes on a consistent basis that Kelly wants his guys to make, and Kelly was clear when he made the preseason QB announcement that Crist had to play well to keep his job (not a ringing endorsement).

As for the Demetrius Jones situation, Clausen would have started the opener in '07 if he wasn't still recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow. However, Jones coughed up the ball a few times before he got yanked. Then, we later found out that he was supposed to be suspended for the first game or two because he skipped team meetings, but either Weis or captains voted to have him play in the opener (can't remember which).

Because I don't think Crist ever really won the position over the summer. He is undoubtedly the most talented of the two, the older of the two, the supposing heir apparent, and supposedly a better leader. Also he lost his job last year to injury. All those factors pretty much picked Crist for Kelly.

If he had picked Rees in the preseason, Crist would be upset and it probably would upset some people. But let Crist start and fail, then the team and the fans would feel more comfortable with Rees playing instead of Crist. But at least give him the chance, maybe Crist does play like that QB we want, but if he doesn't he had a shot, and can still win it back.

Very true. And even when Kelly talked about making the choice he brought up how close it was and how they looked at everything possible and that it was still almost dead even. Crist not playing well, and not showing much in the first half I think was a huge sign to Kelly that while Crist may have the most talent Rees might be the better game QB and gave him a shot.

From what I've seen and heard the leadership stuff with Crist isn't a huge advantage for him as Rees really won over the lockerroom last season and is a great leader himself.

The shocking thing to me was Crist being bumped behind Golson during the game against USF.

I believe it was the players. Clausen wasn't healthy enough for long enough to win the job away from Jones but in the two weeks leading up to the game Clausen started to heal a bit an making strides in practice...even still Clausen was the 3rd ND QB to take snaps against Tech in that opener. I still remember ND trying to run the read option with Jones.

                              Yikes.

What happened to Jones? Didn't he immediately transfer? I can't remember where.
